Former Wahoo Zack Gelof Named AL Rookie of the Month in August

Gelof is the first rookie from the Oakland Athletics to win a rookie of the month award since 2016

Former Virginia baseball star Zack Gelof was named the American League Rookie of the Month after a stellar August for the Oakland Athletics.

A second round pick of the A's in 2021 who made his MLB debut in July, Gelof became the first Oakland rookie since Ryon Healy in September of 2016 to win a rookie of the month award. In the month of August, Gelof batted .286 with seven home runs, eight doubles, 10 walks, a .562 slugging percentage, and four stolen bases. Gelof led all American League rookies in total bases, doubles, and extra-base hits, was tied for first in home runs, second in hits, and third in slugging. He had a pair of four-hit games, including an incredible game against the Washington Nationals on August 13th in which he had four hits and two home runs, his first-career multi-home run game.

In 137 games playing third base at Virginia, Zack Gelof amassed 174 hits, 91 RBI, 16 home runs, and a career .316 batting average. In his junior season in 2021, Gelof led the ACC with 81 hits and earned an All-ACC Second Team selection as he powered the Cavaliers to the College World Series, where he went 7 for 12 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored in three games.

Now playing second base in the Big Leagues, Gelof is quickly making a name for himself and has been a huge bright spot at the end of what has been otherwise another frustrating season for the Oakland Athletics.
