Lions Documentary Highlights Superfans

Lions' superfans star in a new documentary set to debut Sunday.

The Detroit Lions have experienced their fair share of lowlights over the years.

No playoff wins since 1991. No division championships since 1993.

The franchise is also just one of four NFL teams to have never made a Super Bowl.

Despite the organization's long list of shortcomings, the Lions have maintained a rabid fanbase, including a much-celebrated group of superfans.

This collection of Lions supporters, featuring the likes of Ron "Crackman" Crachiola and hundreds of others, has become known for its can't-miss tailgate parties in Eastern Market, a popular outdoor market just 10 minutes away from Ford Field.

The aforementioned group of Lions superfans is now set to receive the documentary treatment from Yellow Flag Creative Group, a Southfield-based digital marketing firm.

The documentary, called "Roar in the D: A Fan Story," chronicles Crachiola and his crew's shenanigans, and will premiere Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on WXYZ-Channel 7 in Detroit. It will also air online on Yellow Flag’s YouTube channel at 1 p.m., and receive future airings on both WXYZ-Channel 7 and WMYD-Channel 20.

Additionally, if you'd like to watch the documentary in person, along with some of the stars of the film, you can do so this afternoon at The Rubber Duck Bar in Clinton Township.

Karen Johnson, a marketing manager for Yellow Flag, conceived the idea for the documentary. Johnson has tailgated with Eastern Market's eclectic bunch of Lions fans for 15 years now.

"Because this group is so special and so crazy, all at the same time, I knew I had a story to tell,” Johnson said of the film. “I was raised with three brothers, so sports were always a big deal in my house. But, I never saw it quite like this."
