Josh Dobbs signs one-year deal with 49ers
Former Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs has agreed to a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, according to his agent, Mike McCartney.
Dobbs was acquired by the Vikings at the 2023 trade deadline, days after Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. Just three days after joining the team, Dobbs was forced into action, taking over under center two drives into the Vikings' Week 9 game at Atlanta. He went on to throw for 158 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 66 yards and a touchdown to help the Vikings to a 31-28 win.
The 29-year-old lit up the New Orleans Saints the following week as the Vikings' starter. In a 27-19 win, Dobbs threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns while running for another touchdown and 44 yards.
In the following two games, Dobbs struggled, throwing for two touchdowns and five interceptions while fumbling the ball three times, losing just one of the fumbles. Minnesota lost both of those games.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell gave Dobbs one final shot coming out of the bye week against the Las Vegas Raiders. Dobbs had his worst game yet, completing just 10-of-23 passes for 63 yards before O'Connell turned to Nick Mullens in the fourth quarter. Mullens led the only scoring drive of the game in the Vikings' 3-0 win.
Dobbs was inactive the following three weeks as Mullens and rookie quarterback Jaren Hall split starts. He was named the backup for the team's final game of the season at Detroit but did not see the field.
Dobbs was a fourth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 draft. The 49ers will be Dobbs' eighth team in his professional career.
