Why Arizona's Guards Hold Keys Against Michigan

Arizona’s guards could be the key against the Michigan Wolverines, as backcourt play and late-game control may decide this March matchup.

Everyone keeps talking about how tough a competitor the Michigan Wolverines are going to be, and yeah, their frontcourt is stacked. But honestly? I think people are missing the real story here.

This game isn’t going to be won by size. It’s going to be won by guards, and that’s exactly where the Arizona Wildcats have the edge.

Arizona’s guards just feel more reliable. They don’t play rushed, they don’t panic, and most importantly, they can take over when it matters. That’s huge in March.

Michigan’s Weak Spot Nobody Talks About

Michigan’s guards aren’t bad, but they’re not scary either. They benefit a lot from their big men doing the heavy lifting. When the offense runs through the post, it makes life easier for everyone else.

But what happens if Arizona shuts that down?

If Arizona can defend the post without constantly double-teaming and giving up open threes, Michigan’s guards will suddenly have to create their own offense.

They’ll have to make plays late in the shot clock, make tough decisions under pressure, and hit contested shots. That’s a completely different game than playing off dominant big men. That’s exactly the situation Arizona should try to create.

Now, suddenly, those guards have to create their own shots. They have to make decisions under pressure. And I don’t fully trust the Wolverines in that situation. That’s where Arizona has to attack. Force Michigan’s guards to be the stars, not the role players.

March Basketball = Guard Play

If you watch college basketball every year, there’s a pattern. The teams that win championships almost always have elite guard play. Not just decent elite.

Guards control the tempo. They handle pressure. They make big shots late. And when things get messy (which they always do in March), they’re the ones who keep everything together.

The Strategy Is Simple

Arizona doesn’t need to overcomplicate this game to win. Don’t double the bigs too much. Stay disciplined. Protect the paint without collapsing. If Arizona does that, everything shifts. The game slows down, the offense becomes less efficient, and suddenly Michigan doesn’t look so unbeatable.

This matchup might look like it’s about size and physicality, but I don’t buy that. I think it comes down to control and guards control games. And if that’s true, Arizona should feel confident. Because when the game is on the line, I trust the Wildcats' guards way more in late-game situations.
