Baylor Football Can Attack the Transfer Portal Now

In the new age of college football, Dave Aranda can hit the transfer portal trail early.

Baylor Bears wide receiver Seth Jones has elected to leave the program early, declaring midseason that he intends to enter the transfer portal. This was almost unheard of a decade ago, but now it's a growing theme in college athletics.

Whether it's at coachless programs like Colorado or Wisconsin or at crumbling units such as Houston and Auburn, active college football players are jumping ship. Granted, these athletes cannot enter the portal until December, but they are making it known early that they intend to do so.

With this happening, Dave Aranda and the Baylor program have a unique opportunity: recruit the transfer portal before the portal even opens.

As Sports Illustrated's John Garcia Jr. voiced on Locked On Baylor, coaches have endless loopholes around the transfer and recruiting rules. It may not be legal to invite a player to your program now, but interest can easily be shone.

This could come in the form of following a player on Twitter and liking their tweets, or it could be something more serious. In an age where every college athlete has in-touch high school coaches or trainers, college coaches can easily put a phone call out to gauge interest.

Utilizing these mediators to communicate, it's not unwise to begin the process of plucking the pick of the litter from the portal now.

In a season where Baylor has not met expectations and continued to underwhelm despite a star cast of characters, it'd be no surprise to see Aranda hit the portal hard in the offseason. Why not get a headstart?
