Should Baylor Move On from Offensive Coordinator Jeff Grimes?

Following a disappointing 2022 campaign, Baylor football may need to change some things.

Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes was the bell of the ball in 2021, his first season after leaving BYU and joining Dave Aranda. The orchestrator of the great Zach Wilson looked like a home run hire. Was it really, though?

Yes. Literally, it's not even up for debate. Grimes is a bright spot of Aranda's three-year tenure, and the numbers back it up.

Despite replacing key playmakers like Tyquan Thornton, Trestan Ebner and Abram Smith, the Baylor offense has barely skipped a beat on the stat book. Especially with a brand-new quarterback, the Bears' numbers are more than serviceable.

Baylor ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rushing yards with 2,228, sixth in the league in passing yards at 2,642 and third in touchdowns with 49.

Mind you, these rankings come in a league that boasts running backs like Deuce Vaugh, Kendre Miller and Bijan Robinson. The Big 12 is also home to highly-touted stars under center like Max Duggan, Spencer Sanders and pretty much any of the Kansas State quarterbacks.

In a league with explosive offenses, Baylor hasn't been left behind. For his efforts, Grimes was even named to the Broyles' Award watchlist for best assistant coach in the nation.

Heck, even SEC programs like Auburn have murmured about bringing Grimes aboard as a head coach. The second-year coordinator has taken a brand-new offense and flipped it into something equipped to win games.

So, you armchair quarterbacks, take your blame and point it elsewhere. Possibly focus on Baylor's rush defense being eighth in the Big 12 or the Bears' seventh-ranked pass defense.
