Byeong Hun An delivered his best tournament finish in nearly four years, earning a tie for third place at the Scottish Open on Sunday at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.

It wasn’t the finish the one-time Cal golfer had in mind after tying the course record with a 9-under 61 in Thursday’s first round, but his third-place tie did secure An his ninth entry into The Open, beginning Thursday at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

An shot an even-par 70 on Sunday and was just 1 under over the final three rounds.

That gave him no chance to keep pace with Rory McIlroy, who birdied the final two holes to beat Robert MacIntye for the title. McIlroy wound up at 15 under, one stroke better than MacIntyre, who carded a 6-under 64 in the final round.

An finished on equal footing with Scottie Scheffler and David Lingmerth, all at 10 under par.

It was the best finish for the 31-year-old since finishing alone in third at the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sept. 15, 2019. Ranked 131st in the world, An has never won on the PGA tour or top circuit.

Cal grad Max Homa closed with a 2-over 72 and slipped two spots into a seven-way tie for 12th place and 7 under. Homa, ranked eighth in the world, was at 9 under through three rounds.

Cal’s other prominent PGA tour member, Collin Morikawa, took the week off and instead took in Wimbledon as a spectator for the first time.

Morikawa is hoping to show the form he did two years ago when he won The Open for his second major title. It’s the most recent victory he owns, although the 26-year-old played superbly two weeks ago, shooting 24 under at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
