Friday and Saturday were good days for Cal with the bat and ball.

Cal's baseball team won its season opener against 24th-ranked Kansas State on Friday and clobbered Georgetown....on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Bears softball team beat Cal State Fullerton and Grand Canyon on Friday, then knocked off 17th-ranked Virginia Tech and Illinois State on Saturday to improve its record to 9-1.

Freshman Trey Newmann was the starting pitcher in the Bears' season-opener at the 2024 MLB Desert Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Friday, and he allowed just one hit and one walk in four scoreless innings in Cal's 6-3 victory over 24th-ranked Kansas State.

After giving up a one-out single in the first inning, Newmann pitched hitless ball for the rest of his outing in which he threw 68 pitches.

He left with a 2-0 lead, but did not get the win because he pitched just four innings.  The win went to Christian Becerra, even though he allowed three earned runs in two innings of work.

Rodney Green Jr., Jarren Avincula, PJ Moutzouridis and Alec Ritch had two apiece for Cal, and it was Moutzouridis two-run single in the fifth inning that put Cal ahead to stay at 4-3.

On Saturday, Carson Crawford, Green and Ryan Tayman all hit home runs in the Bears' 12-3 victory over Georgetown.  Cal pounded out 15 hits and Bears pitchers struck out 16 Hoya batters as Cal improved its record to 2-0.

Cal softball sweeps four games

Cal freshman Kyndal Todd smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bears a 5-2 victory over Illinois State, giving Cal its fourth win in two days the Littlewood Classic in Phoenix.

Earlier Saturday, Elon Butler went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in the Bears' 6-5, eight-inning victory over No. 17 Virginia Tech. Butler has four homers and is hitting .500 over the first 10 games.

On Friday, Cal beat previously unbeaten Cal State Fullerton 6-1 as Acacia Anders and Todd has two hits and two RBIs apiece. In their second game on Friday, Cal knocked off Grand Canyon College 7-4 as Butler, Mika Lee and Alexis Bishop all hit home runs for the Bears, who have won seven games in a row.
