World champion hammer thrower Camryn Rogers finished 13th in world-wide voting for the Track and Field News’ annual Women’s Athlete of the Year.

If 13th doesn’t sound particularly impressive, consider this is a vote by a 32-member international panel judging the performances of thousands of female track and field athletes from across the globe competing in 19 events.

Rogers, the 24-year-old Canadian and Cal graduate, earned the No. 1 global ranking in the women’s hammer by World Athletics and the 13th spot in T&FN’s 2023 all-event voting.

A three-time NCAA champion and collegiate recordholder at Cal, she won her first major international title last summer by dominating the field at the World Championships in Budapest.

A year after capturing a silver medal at the Worlds in Eugene, Oregon, Rogers threw 253 feet, 4 inches (77.72 meters) on her first attempt of the competition and that stood up as the winning mark.

By the time she was finished, Rogers had the five top marks on the day, toppling Americans Janee’ Kassanavoid and DeAnna Price, who took home the silver and bronze medals.

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, 29, dominated the T&FN Athlete of the Year voting, securing 31 of 32 first-place votes after a season in which she was undefeated in the 1,500 meters and mile, winning the world title in the 1,500 and setting world records in both middle-distance races. She also set a world record and won the world title in the 5,000.

Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson finished second in the Athlete of the Year voting with hurdler Femke Bol of the Netherlands taking third place while capturing the only other first-place ballot.
