Former Cal stars Colin Morikawa and Max Homa both played bogey-free golf Friday, combining to shoot 12 under par in the second round of the Travelers Championship.

And both still missed the cut.

Morikawa, who carded a 4-over 74 in the first round, responded with a 7-under 63 on Friday - an improvement of 11 strokes - to leave the course at 3 under for two days.

The world's 19th-ranked player was one stroke shy of making the cut at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

World No. 9 Homa, who shot a 2-over 72 in the opening round, followed that with a 5-under 65 but also missed advancing to the weekend by a single stroke.

The only former Golden Bear who made it through to Saturday was 29-year-old Michael Kim, the world’s 134th-ranked golfer. He followed his opening-round 68 with a 65 that included seven birdies to wind up at 7 under and tied for 22nd place with, among others, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay.

All three are eight strokes back of co-leaders Denny McCarthy and Keegan Bradley, who completed 36 holes at 15 under to set a tournament record. McCarthy followed his opening-round 60 with a 65, and Bradley assembled scores of 62 and 63.

Chez Reavie, who won the Travelers in 2019, is third at minus-13 as golfers needed to be at least 4 under to be among the 67 players who made the cut to reach the weekend.

A fourth Cal alum, Byeong Hun An, matched the two-day scores of Morikawa and Homa, missing the cut after carding a 3-under total after a 69 on Friday.
