Buffs in the NFL: Mason Crosby holding out for a return to Packers
Mason Crosby hasn't shut the door on returning to Green Bay, but the Packers might've already moved on from the veteran kicker.
During an ESPN interview, the former Buffs standout relayed his thoughts on being a free agent and said Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was unclear about the team's intentions going forward
“Gutey was pretty honest with where the organization was and, at that moment, pretty tight with cap space and trying to figure everything out with Aaron (Rodgers),” Crosby said. He went on to say Gutekunst never discussed a return option for the 17-year kicker. The Packers head to camp at the end of next month with rookie Anders Carlson as the go-to option on the roster.
Crosby, 38, hasn't hinted at any plans to retire and still believes he can contribute to the league. There's a sense he won't sign with another team until the door has been shut in Green Bay, but given the vibe at the current moment, now might be the time to find a new home. With Rodgers moving on to New York, the Packers seem to be pushing toward a rebuilding stage. It's only a matter of time before Crosby reevaluates his market value.
If this is the end for Crosby, he'll leave Green Bay as the all-time scoring king for the storied franchise with 1,918 points, currently 11th on the NFL's all-time list. He also be credited for scoring the final points in the Packers' 31-25 victory over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
