Duke’s players met with the media after Friday’s Countdown to Craziness scrimmage game.

Freshman center Vernon Carey Jr. scored 15 points for the Blue Team on 7 of 10 shooting, including a three pointer. He added three rebounds and a blocked shot.

He admitted to having a case of nerves, appearing in front of the Cameron Indoor Stadium crowd for the first time.

“It was exciting just to see everyone out there,” he said. “Being my first time in Cameron, playing in there, it was just a great experience overall. [I was nervous] at the beginning, but after the intro I was pretty much ok.”

As for what he needs to work on, he said, “Just getting in better shape, getting stronger, and just being more physical.”

Forward Wendell Moore had 11 points and three steals for the White Team.

He missed all four of his three-point attempts but said that will be part of his game this year. He just had an off night.

Moore also admitted to a learning experience late in the game. With his team trying to rally from behind, he bent over to pick up a loose ball, only to have senior Jack White dive on the floor to snatch the ball away.

Hitting the floor for loose balls is a Duke tradition and it was message received for Moore, as White, at the locker next to him, reached over and patted his leg as he talked about it.

Tre Jones also discussed the game and, more importantly, the fact that he could bring his mother onto the floor with him for player introductions. She was battling cancer last season, and he was relieved that she’s doing better.
