CB Wardell Mack Flips From Florida to Texas

The Gators lose their second commitment in 24 hours.

Marrero, La., cornerback Wardell Mack has flipped his commitment from Florida to Texas, ending his near three-month pledge to the Gators, he announced on Sunday.

Mack, the nation’s No. 129 overall player and No. 13 rated cornerback in the class per 247Sports Composite, is the second 2024 prospect to depart from UF’s class this weekend. He joins Picayune, Miss., edge rusher Jamonta Waller — who aligned himself with High Freeze at Auburn.

The Louisiana native became a favorite of head coach Billy Napier in the spring despite his mold-breaking 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame.

Building a strong rapport following a March 9 offer, the two sides reciprocated their considerable interest. Mack officially visited the University of Florida in mid-June, positioning the Gators firmly atop his shortlist of prospective schools.

His recruitment culminated in an Aug. 14 pledge, presenting the Gators an uber-versatile and instinctual cornerback prospect who can occupy several roles at the collegiate level.

However, Sunday’s announcement sends Florida back to the drawing board.

Mack’s departure to the Longhorns leaves Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota, Fla.) prospect Teddy Foster as the lone cornerback commit for Florida in the cycle. Safeties Xavier Filsaime and Josiah Davis complete the secondary class currently assembled.

The Gators continue to pursue several options at the cornerback position down the stretch of the 2024 cycle.

Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.) product Zavier Mincey and Alabama commit Jameer Grimsley are the most notable targets on secondary coach Corey Raymond’s radar.
