Three Takeaways From Georgia Tech's Early Signing Period

The Early signing period is a hectic time for college coaches, especially for one who is two days away from playing in a bowl game. Georgia Tech is playing UCF on Friday night, but Brent Key and his staff have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on their 2024 class, while also getting potential impact players through the portal.

Georgia Tech is going to sign its highest-rated class on 247Sports since the 2020 class and it has some real impact players in it.

So what are the three takeaways from today for Georgia Tech?

1. Brent Key and his staff closed strong

It was an eventful day for the Yellow Jackets staff. The morning started off with no surprises, but the first big announcement came this morning when Georgia transfer linebacker E.J. Lightsey committed to and signed with the Yellow Jackets this morning.

Later in the afternoon, Georgia Tech was able to flip three-star defensive end Amontrae Bradford from Deion Sanders and Colorado, making a big splash. Bradford has been a Georgia Tech target for some time, but committed to Colorado in October. Key and his staff kept fighting though and were able to flip the in-state defensive end today.

Soon after, Georgia Tech was able to land four-star running back Anthony Carrie over Texas A&M, North Carolina, and Michigan State.

Landing all of these guys and keeping their top guys together is a good day for Key. He is still in the process of building this roster out, but today was a good day for that.

2. Georgia Tech held onto the cornerstones of the class

Not only did Georgia Tech add to the class today, but they kept everyone else in it. Quarterbacks Aaron Philo and Graham Knowles could be the quarterbacks of the future, Isiah Canion and Trey Horne have bright futures at wide receiver, Luke Harpring might end up being the best player in the class, and the offensive line did well in getting size and power at the position for the future.

Going into his second season in 2024, Key will still be building out his roster and getting depth at every position. I think this class is a step in that direction.

3. There are plenty of hidden gems in this class

Some of the higher-ranked recruits will get a lot of attention, but Georgia Tech has some guys in this class that nobody is talking much about that I think have a chance to be impact players at the next level.

Linebacker Tah'j Butler is one of those guys. Butler has an intriguing profile and a lot of athleticism for the position.

"Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN … Ranked as the No. 29 player in the talent-rich state of Louisiana by Rivals … Named New Orleans Catholic League Defensive MVP and first-team all-league as a senior in 2023 … Helped lead team to 10-2 record and semifinals of 2023 Louisiana Division I Select playoffs as a senior"

In-state defensive back Cedric Franklin is another guy that I think projects well to the next level. After he de-committed from Virginia, Georgia Tech wasted no time in getting him in the class, and for good reason.

"Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN … Versatile athlete played cornerback and quarterback at Kell H.S. … With teams generally avoiding throwing in his area, Franklin II made 61 tackles with an interception, seven pass breakups and two fumble recoveries over final two prep seasons … Also completed 11-of-14 passes for 229 yards (20.8 yards per completion) and three touchdowns in spot duty at QB as a senior in 2023 … Named team’s most improved player as a junior in 2022 … Helped lead Kell to 19-4 overall record and 11-1 region record over final two seasons … Coached by Bobby May … Also lettered in basketball "

A lot of guys will need developing, but there are always a couple of guys that can make instant impacts as freshmen and Georgia Tech has some of those guys.
