Just the Second Meeting Ever Between SMU and BC

The only other meeting to date between these two football programs came way back in 1986.

SMU won a closely contested matchup 31-29 at Texas Stadium in Irving that day.

SMU's Last Game As a Member of the AAC

The Mustangs will move into the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2024 season, completing SMU's climb to Power Five status. Soon enough, SMU and Boston College will be conference mates and this matchup will be a fairly regular occurrence...four times in the next six seasons, in fact.

As a member of the AAC from 2013 to 2023, SMU amassed record of 68-66, prior to this bowl game.

SMU Just Missed A New Year's Six Spot

While a spot in the Fiesta Bowl ultimately went to CUSA's undefeated Liberty Flames, the AAC champion Mustangs were ranked just one spot behind Liberty in the final College Football Playoff rankings of the season.

After conference championship weekend, the question of whether or not this was the right decision was, and still is, hotly debated amongst G5 enthusiasts.

Despite, the CFP committee's comments that seem to imply the contrary, SMU are a different team without Preston Stone at quarterback. Stone broke his leg in the final regular season game of the season and Kevin Jennings led the Mustangs to a win in the AAC title game.
