Battle of the Lady Tigers: Jackson State Holds Off Grambling State, Advances to 2nd Round

No. 1 Jackson State (21-8, 17-1 SWAC) held off No. 8 Grambling State (9-20, 8-9 SWAC) 59-50 in the first round of the 2023 SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament at Bartow Arena.
The defending tournament champions from Jackson State entered the court out of halftime tied at 29 with the Grambling State Lady Tigers. JSU would gain a 16-9 scoring advantage in the third period to lead 45-38 going into the 4th stanza.
Unlike most SWAC games, JSU wasn't dominant, fending off a hungry Grambling team hoping for an upset. Ultimately, Tomekia Reed's team would hold on and win 59-50, advancing to the second round.
Jariyah Covington played 38 minutes and led the Lady Tigers from Jackson with 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Uncharacteristically, Covington notched six, and Angel Jackson added five turnovers on the evening.
Daphane White registered a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. JSU is usually solid from the free throw line but mustered only 22-of-33 (66.7%) against Grambling.
The JSU bench contributed 14 points.
Grambling's Keshuna Luckett led the Lady Tigers scoring 12 points, five rebounds, and an assist. Phylicia Allen, Ja'Leah Hickmon, and Colbi Maples each had 9 points in the loss.
