The 'BoomBox Classic' Preview: Tigers, Jags Clash In Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE - Another installment of the "BoomBox Classic" featuring Jackson State vs. Southern University will occur at A.W. Mumford Stadium in front of a soldout crowd. ESPN+ will broadcast the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) rivalry with a 6 PM CT kickoff from Baton Rouge, LA.
Tonight's tilt hopes to be billed as a preview of the upcoming 2023 Cricket SWAC Championship in December, but it's mostly about bragging rights. Although the clash of the Tigers and Jaguars won't affect their respective SWAC division title chase, it's all about needing a psychological win. Southern lost their season opener to Alabama State, 14-10, and Florida A&M defeated Jackson State, 28-10, in the 2023 Denny's Orange Blossom Classic in Week 1.
The Jags have lost the previous three games to the Tigers (2 regular season, 1 SWAC Championship), so it's time for revenge at home. Especially after the devastating 21-17 comeback victory JSU handed Southern at home in 2021.
Southern cannot afford to go down 0-2 to start the season. Neither would T.C. Taylor see value in a 1-2 beginning to his collegiate head coaching career. The Bluff will be rocking with the bands and fans, but the hits and pain will be inside the game. Expect this one to be closer than usual, with the home having a slight edge.
Prediction: HOT AND HUMID! Especially between the "Sonic Boom of the South" vs. the "Human Jukebox" in the Battle of the Bands.
