BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten regular season tips off Friday night at 7 p.m. ET with a matchup between Indiana and Maryland.

The Hoosiers are coming off a 13-point win over Harvard on Sunday, while Maryland racked up 103 points in a blowout win over Rider on Tuesday.

  • Season projections: Indiana is 12th with plus-3000 odds to win the Big Ten, according to the FanDuel Sportsbook. Maryland is tied for fifth at plus-1300.
  • Last season: Indiana went 23-12 overall and 12-8 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to No. 5 seed Miami in the Round of 32. Maryland went 22-13 overall and finished fifth in the Big Ten with an 11-9 conference record. The Terrapins earned a No. 8 in the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated West Virginia then lost to No. 1 seed Alabama in the Round of 32.
  • Last meeting: Indiana defeated Maryland 70-60 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at the United Center in Chicago on March 10, 2023. Trayce Jackson-Davis added 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and three steals, followed by Jalen Hood-Schifino with 19 points. Maryland made nine 3-pointers, but shot just 32.3% overall. Hakim Hart led the Terrapins with 16 points.
  • Series history: Indiana leads the all-time series 12-9. Perhaps the most notable matchup came in the 2002 national championship game, when Maryland defeated Indiana 64-52 behind 18 points from Juan Dixon.

Meet the coaches

  • Kevin Willard, Maryland: Willard is in his second season at Maryland with a 26-16 record overall and an 11-9 record in the Big Ten. He previously coached at Seton Hall from 2010-22 and posted a 225-161 record and a 105-113 mark in Big East play. Willard led Seton Hall to five NCAA Tournament appearances, but he has won just one tournament game. Seton Hall tied for the Big East regular season title during the 2019-20 season, when the NCAA Tournament was canceled. 
  • Mike Woodson, Indiana: Woodson is in his third season at Indiana with a 49-27 overall record and a 21-19 mark in regular season Big Ten play. Woodson has NBA head coaching experience with the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and the New York Knicks from 2012-14. Woodson played at Indiana University from 1976-80, and was named the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player as a senior under coach Bob Knight. He was the 12th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, and played for various teams from 1980-91, averaging 14 points over 786 games.
