Indiana basketball: Green, Durham named captains for 2019-20 season

Guards were chosen as leaders by their teammates for the critical season ahead for the Hoosiers.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana's basketball team chooses its captain by a team votes, and the Hoosiers have cast their lots for the upcoming season. Guards Devonte Green and Al Durham are the guys, according to a release from the university on Monday.

“Being a team captain comes with great responsibility,” Indiana coach Archie Miller said. “You lead by example on the floor every day with your work ethic and in the locker room by not being afraid to hold your teammates accountable in representing the standards we expect when you wear Indiana across your chest.

"Devonte and Al have earned the respect of their teammates and coaching staff.”

Green, a senior from North Babylon, N.Y., is the Hoosiers' leading returning scorer and has played in more games (91) than anyone on the Indiana roster. He averaged 9.4 points per game a year ago and led the team in 3-point shooting, hitting 41 percent.

He was sensational down the stretch a year ago, averaging 15.6 in Indiana's final seven games and scoring at least 11 points in every game. He had 26 in the Big Ten Tournament loss to Ohio State.

Durham, the 6-foot-4 junior from Lilburn, Ga., has started 39 games the past two seasons. He averaged 8.3 points a year ago and had 54 assists. He also led the team in free throw shooting, averaging 73.6 percent.

Indiana opens its regular season on Nov. 5 against Western Illinois.
