John Isenbarger, Indiana All-American Football Player, Dies at 76

John Isenbarger, a two-time All-American running back and punter at Indiana, has died at the age of 76. The school announced the sad news on Thursday night.

John Isenbarger, a two-time All-American football player at Indiana, has died. The school's athletic department revealed the news in a social media post on Thursday night. He was 76.

Isenbarger played at Indiana from 1967-69 and was a member of the Hoosiers' 1968 Rose Bowl team. He served as the team's running back and punter throughout his career.

Before attending Indiana, Isenbarger was a standout athlete at Muncie Central High School (Muncie, Ind.).

In 1969, Isenbarger rushed for a record-setting 1,217 yards and scored five touchdowns for the Hoosiers. He also led the Big Ten in punting during the 1967 campaign. 

"Indiana University mourns the loss of All-American & IU Hall of Famer John Isenbarger," the school said in the social media post.

When his career ended at Indiana, Isenbarger was a two-time All-American and a two-time All-Big Ten selection. He rushed for 2,465 yards and 14 touchdowns and also accounted for 363 receiving yards and two more scores.

Isenbarger was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1970 NFL Draft. He spent all four seasons in the league with the Niners.

Isenbarger was inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991.
