Kansas vs Texas Tech: Player Ratings to the Theme of No Theme Needed

Texas Tech destroys Kansas so we go themeless for the first time

I think we can all agree that this game doesn’t need to be spoken of again. So much so that we aren’t even going to create a theme for the player ratings. What’s the point? So instead, we’ll just go with obvious statements that could be made about that game, and what's worse is that these these things could've been said at basically any point in the game as it was an atrocious performance from start to finish. Yes, we’ll still have categories so feel free to skip the criteria by using the table of contents if you are already familiar.

5 Stars: Out of this world performance. This is a hard to achieve rating and is only reserved for the most impressive or impressionable performances.

4 Stars: A strong performance that falls just short of the standards above.

3 Stars: Average performance. Also could be a very strong game in one aspect but a very poor game in another such as 15 points but seven turnovers. Could also be that the player played, did their job, but didn't do much spectacularly.

2 Stars: Below average performance, or we simply have higher expectations for the player on this particular night.

1 Star: Rare, but if a player has a stinker in all aspects.

Memorial No Star: Named after former KU walk-on Chris Teahan and is awarded to the player(s) who didn't have enough playing time to contribute or whose performance isn't worthy of a rating for another reason.

5 Stars: Bill Self being ejected so he didn’t have to watch any more of that

We feel you Bill. If you’re a Kansas fan and your job isn’t directly related to watching the games, did you watch it all? I’m going to go with a no on that one.

Obviously, no one was a five star

4 Stars: Cutting away from an uncompetitive game

Remember when the NCAA tournament was only on CBS and they constantly cut away from games to try to take the viewers to something more competitive? They could’ve and rightfully would’ve made the switch a few minutes into the second half. They actually could’ve done it with about eight minutes to go in the first half because you could tell that Kansas was cooked.

No one was a four star.

3 Stars: That stunk

Perhaps the understatement of the 2023-24 season so far. I can’t remember a performance that pitiful in a long, long time.

Nick Timberlake was probably the best Jayhawk in this one. He canned two threes and finished with 13 points on five of seven shooting from the floor. Perhaps his confidence is growing.

Elmarko Jackson was solid for KU in a game where basically no one else was. Looked assertive at times and Kansas will need performances like this from Jackson down the stretch.

Sure, I’ll slot Johnny Furphy here. Why not. Ended with 13 points on four of eight shooting but only made one three.

2 Stars: Not fit for print

This is a PG rated website, so we can’t write what we really want to write here. That’s ok. I’m sure that some of you used that language as you watched the game unfold.

Dajuan Harris gets a bit of a pass as he was obviously not 100%. He finished the game with seven points and three assists. When no one else can score, Dajuan usually steps up. But what was he supposed to do in this one, score 40?

Parker Braun had a block but on a night when Dickinson was invisible, Parker needs to do something while he is on the court.

1 Star: Will this be the first ever game with multiple one stars?

Yes, yes it will.

That was an all-time terrible performance from Hunter Dickinson. He was two of twelve from the floor, finished with five points and seven rebounds. The play that summed up his terrible performance was the lob over his head for an easy Tech basket. I think Hunter’s vertical on that play might have eclipsed the one inch mark. Not sure. I know I’m being overdramatic and exaggerating, but if you’re an All-American and your All-American teammate is on the bench injured, you have to come out ready to have the game of your life. Hunter did the exact opposite putting in his worst performance as a Jayhawk.

KJ Adams didn’t appear to have the typical energy that he usually does, and he forced up shots that he normally doesn’t. KJ was 1-10 from the field and ended with five points and three rebounds. Sure, he receives only one star for this game, but knowing KJ, I’m looking for him to have a monster game against Oklahoma on Saturday.

Chris Teahan Memorial No Star:

The walk-ons played with valor, especially Wilder Evers who came on late in the first half as a defensive replacement. Props to Michael Jankovich, Dillon Wilhite, and especially Chris Carter who got his first minutes as a Jayhawk.
