The 2023-24 college basketball season is just over one week away from getting started, and the hype around John Calipari's Kentucky squad - particularly their group of freshmen - is palpable.

ESPN recently posted a list of 20 freshmen superlatives for the 2023 class, and a trio of Wildcats were included as this team prepares to go very young this upcoming season.

While none of Kentucky's freshmen were selected for top playmaker (Isaiah Collier - USC), top passer (Elliot Cadeau - UNC), or best athlete (Coen Carr - MSU), there were still three superlatives that were given to Wildcats on ESPN's list:

Most Versatile - Justin Edwards

Edwards is also projected by many to be a lottery pick in the 2024 NBA draft, as well as the SEC Freshman of the Year. His ability to play multiple positions will come in handy early in the season, with injuries and eligibility issues impacting the club.

Best Downhill Driver - DJ Wagner

Wagner is another NBA draft candidate, and his ability to get to the rim will be valuable for Cal's squad with the departure of Sahvir Wheeler. Between Wagner and Antonio Reeves, opposing teams will have their hands full with this backcourt.

Biggest Surprise - Reed Sheppard

The son of former Kentucky hooper Jeff Sheppard, Reed has already looked like more than just a legacy addition for coach Calipari. His high-level shooting and advanced feel for the game could make him an unlikely one-and-done for the Wildcats.
