John Holcombe, Future QB1?

As the pre-season practice rages on - the question of who will backup quarterback Skylar Thompson is on the top of everyone's mind.

Myriad articles have been published over the last several weeks about perhaps the most intriguing position battle in Coach Chris Klieman's first camp in Manhattan: the battle for backup quarterback behind incumbent and presumptive starter, Junior Skylar Thompson.

This question has been broached by the Wichita Eagle, (twice!), 247Sports and our friends over at GoPowercat, and KSNT

As such, I wanted to take a look at some of Holcombe's film, to decide if he has what it takes to be the future QB1 for our beloved Cats.

What I learned is that the 6'4", 227lb is a big, fast, strong imposing duel threat quarterback who definitely has what it takes to be a force in the Big 12.

The redshirt freshman was a star in high school in Humble, Tx, where he: "Played at Summer Creek under head coach Brian Ford... Rated the 13th-best dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports, while he was ranked 28th by Rivals and 33rd by ESPN... Viewed as the fifth-best dual-threat quarterback in the state of Texas by Lone Star Prospects... Named the UIL District 21-6A Offensive MVP in 2017 after throwing for 2,369 yards and 22 touchdowns... Also rushed for 551 yards and another nine scores during senior season... Earned VYPE Magazine All-Houston honors... Helped the Bulldogs advance to the area round of the 6A state playoffs... Named a second team all-district performer as a junior in 2016... High school teammate current Wildcat offensive lineman Christian Duffie... Also participated in track and field."

What an athlete:
