LSU Fall Camp: Storylines Heading Into Week 2

Brian Kelly and Co. begin their second week of fall camp, position battles emerging.

LSU begins week two of fall camp on Monday after a productive first three days on the practice field in the Charles McClendon Facility.

Now, as the attention goes to the second week, we’re seeing position battles emerge, freshmen turning heads and more.

Here are a few storylines heading into Week 2:

Position Battles

The Tigers will see position battles take shape this week with Kelly and Co. circling the offensive line and secondary. After bringing in a fresh-faced defensive back group, identifying starting caliber players will be what takes place in the second week.

It’s evident that Zy Alexander, Duce Chestnut, Denver Harris and Laterrance Welch continue getting a majority of reps, but now will be where the starters begin to emerge.

At safety, both Major Burns and Greg Brooks have held it down for this unit, but with Javien Toviano and others emerging, the Tigers could get creative. Sage Ryan will also be a name to monitor at nickel.

When it comes to the offensive live, the center position is circled as a major position battle moving forward between Charles Turner and Marlon Martinez. This week will provide some more intel on what’s expected between the two.

Freshmen Turning Heads?

Dashawn Womack and Ka’Morreun Pimpton have been two players looking the part through the first few days of camp with Pimpton showing his versatility during both media viewings on Thursday and Friday.

Pimpton has soft hands and already has the ideal size of an SEC tight end. He stands at 6-foot-6, 240-pounds and uses his physical tools to his advantage.

Along with Pimpton, Womack has looked noticeably stronger. He’s sitting around 260 pounds and the former 5-star defensive lineman has continued reshaping his body ever since arriving in Baton Rouge.

The LSU coaching staff is high on both youngsters moving forward. Another key note is Zalance Heard. The 5-star freshman offensive lineman is already running with the 2’s and making an impact in a variety of areas.

How will each be used? Week 2 should provide a little more clarity.

Running Back Distribution

The Tigers have eight scholarship running backs taking snaps during fall camp with Frank Wilson having a variety of guys to use, but how will this coaching staff distribute reps moving forward?

With senior back John Emery returning on Friday, all eight guys are back on the field for LSU as they look to make an impact in some way, shape or form. There are plenty of mouths to feed with the dividing of snaps being a major talking point.

Josh Williams continues receiving first team reps with Notre Dame transfer Logan Diggs and Armoni Goodwin both getting snaps of their own.

As Week 2 unfolds, the distribution among running backs will be interesting to monitor.
