LSU Football: Brian Kelly Provides Injury Report, Updates Maason Smith's Status

Kelly provides his first injury update of the season, discusses the status of Maason Smith.

Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers are six days away from their season opener against the Florida State Seminoles and this program has remained relatively healthy throughout the offseason.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown in the Sunshine State, the Tigers will be monitoring the statuses of a few players, but all signs point to LSU looking healthy.

Kelly provided the first injury report of the season while updating the status of defensive lineman Maason Smith:

Maason Smith

Smith will be unavailable for the season opener against the Seminoles after the NCAA suspended the star defensive tackle for “receiving improper benefits” in 2021.

For most of August, Smith had been limited in practice after suffering an ankle sprain during Fall Camp.

"He's still not practicing at the level that he needs to be practicing for us to say that he would (need to be to play)," Kelly said Monday.

Kelly also added that Smith’s status would be listed as “questionable” if he wasn’t dealing with a suspension:

Armoni Goodwin

The third-year Tiger took on a major role last season as just a sophomore, but injuries slowly derailed a season that many believe Goodwin would break out in. Now, entering his junior campaign in Baton Rouge, he remains sidelined.

Goodwin is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s contest against Florida State as he continues healing up from an injury suffered last season. After missing most of Fall Camp, it was expected Goodwin would be doubtful for the season opener.

Josh Williams

Williams was limited for most of Fall Camp as well but continued working in individual drills on the sideline with trainers. Kelly listed Williams as probable for Sunday’s contest, and after speaking to the fifth-year senior last week, all signs point towards Williams suiting up against Florida State.

Kimo Makaneole

Makaneole will serve as the backup left guard for the Tigers this season after taking significant second-team snaps during Fall Camp. looking ahead to the season opener and Makaneole will be listed as questionable, according to Brian Kelly.
