LSU Practice Report: Greg Brooks' Status, Wide Receivers Emerging

Tigers beginning to see roles come to light, Sage Ryan making an impact.

LSU went through their eighth spring practice early Tuesday morning as rotations begin to emerge on both sides of the ball.

It was a hot, damp morning on the practice field, but it didn't stop the Tigers from getting after it once again.

We saw interim defensive line coach Gerald Chatman working his position group through intense drills, wide receiver roles breaking through and Harold Perkins continuing to work alongside Omar Speights at linebacker.

A few takeaways:

Defensive Line Work Under Interim Gerald Chatman

After Jamar Cain accepted a role as the Denver Broncos' pass rush specialist, Brian Kelly turned to analyst Gerald Chatman to take over interim duties as the defensive line coach.

Since then, this unit has continued their strong spring despite numbers being relatively thin. At JACK linebacker it's mainly been Ovie Oghuofo, Bradyn Swinson and early-enrollee Jaxon Howard.

Defensive coordinator Matt House spoke after practice, detailing how this group has stepped up even when there's been a lack of bodies in drills.

Wide Receivers Emerging

Malik Nabers looks incredibly sharp. He's been crisp in his route running, agile in drills and looking the part as LSU's clearcut WR1 heading into the 2023 season.

Aside from the obvious of Nabers looking the part, second-year Tiger Kyren Lacy has been efficient. In what could be a breakout year for the former Louisiana Ragin' Cajun, Lacy has looked great during camp.

Nabers, Lacy and Brian Thomas Jr. have looked the part through camp with Landon Ibieta also making a few solid plays. Despite a drop at one part during the media viewing, it's nice to see the youngster put it behind him and keep taking strides in the right direction in a loaded wide receiver room.

Greg Brooks Jr. Back On The Field

Second-year Tiger Greg Brooks Jr. was seen in a walking boot last week during practice. Fast forward to Tuesday's media viewing and Brooks was back out on the field in pads without the boot.

It's key to keep the Louisiana native healthy during camp, and after being listed as day-to-day after a minor hiccup, Brooks is back out on the field and looking to pick up where he left off.

He was seen working with the other current injured Tigers on the opposite side of the field this morning, but being out of the boot and in pads is a positive sign as he works to get back to 100%.

Sage Ryan Breakout Year?

Ryan has been working as the first team nickel during camp and it continued into Tuesday's practice. A player who has all the intangibles to be a stud for the Tigers this season, he's making the most of spring camp.

It's important to note Syracuse transfer Duce Chestnut is out for camp as he nurses an injury, and he could certainly compete with Ryan for starting duties, but so far Ryan has looked efficient.
