Brian Kelly and his LSU Tigers continue adding in different elements to their spring practices after getting through Day 5 of camp.

It was a hot day on the practice fields for the Tigers as they went through various position drills, but it didn’t stop Kelly’s squad from getting after it once again.

A few takeaways from Saturday’s practice:

Javien Toviano, Secondary

Toviano continues getting in work with the safeties during spring ball. It was a given he’d move around with the significant depth the Tigers have in the cornerback room. After adding Zy Alexander, Denver Harris and more, LSU’s cornerback room is in a good place.

For Toviano, he has the chance to take on a hybrid role for the Bayou Bengals during his freshman campaign. In high school, he’s proven how versatile he can be, and it’s clear Brian Kelly and his staff are looking to utilize that during spring camp and eventually into the season.

Denver Harris and Laterrance Welch continue getting run with the cornerbacks as well. For Southeastern Louisiana transfer Zy Alexander, he’s certainly standing out in a room that has no shortage of talent.

Hurry Up Drills

We had the chance to evaluate the Tigers’ offense in a hurry up setting. On the first team was Jayden Daniels with Noah Cain in the backfield accompanied by receivers Malik Nabers (slot), Kyren Lacy (outside) and Brian Thomas Jr. (outside).

Garrett Nussmeier took reps with the second team with Trey Holly getting some run behind him. At receiver we saw Chris Hilton and Landon Ibieta on the outside with early-enrollee Kyle Parker running in the slot.

Saturday's drills gave us a better look at the offensive line which continues to be razor thin. It’s important to note the reinforcements on the way with five newcomers set to enroll at LSU this summer after spring camp, but nonetheless, putting significant mileage on the first team remains a topic of conversation.

Special Teams

There was a five minute drill where special teams went through the motions, and after a challenging 2022 season with this unit, this offseason is of significance. We saw both Harold Perkins and Omar Speights line up in field goal block as well.

Damian Ramos and Nathan Dilbert looked consistent with Ramos knocking in all of his kicks and Dilbert also getting it done during the short drills.
