LSU took the field early Thursday morning with the Tigers kicking off preseason camp as they lock in for their Sept. 3 opener against Florida State.

From the offensive depth on full display to freshmen shining early, there were a few key takeaways on Thursday.

A few notes from Day 1 of Fall Camp:

Secondary Will Be A Work In Progress

Coming into fall camp it was understood the secondary would be a vulnerable position group and fall camp will be a time where this unit gains continuity.

On Day 1, it was clear they’ll be a work in progress.During one-on-one’s, the wide receiver unit controlled the pace, giving the secondary fits for most of the practice. Aside from a pass breakup by Duce Chestnut and Zy Alexander, the secondary certainly struggled for the most part.

Despite a few hiccups, the talent-level is clearly there from this group and it’s only a matter of time until they hit their stride. A handful of transfers, several freshman and returning talent that hasn’t seen the field in an expanded capacity, it’s a given this group will need time.

Chestnut, Alexander, Andre Sam and Major Burns took a majority of the first team reps in the secondary.

Offensive Depth

It started off with a Garrett Nussmeier 60-yard bomb during one-on-one’s and the offense never looked back. With Jayden Daniels and Nussmeier going through the motions controlling the offense, we got a look at the wide receiver depth the Tigers attain.

Malik Nabers, Kyren Lacy and Brian Thomas Jr. handled business on first-team for the most part with Aaron Anderson rotating in at the slot.

Will Campbell (LT), Garrett Dellinger (LG), Charles Turner (Center), Miles Frazier (LG) and Emery Jones (LT) took first-team reps at offensive line. Marlon Martinez will battle for starting reps.

At running back, the Tigers rolled with seven of the eight scholarship backs. The lone absentee was John Emery. Josh Williams took starting reps with Logan Diggs also entering the mix.

No John Emery

LSU running back John Emery was absent for Day 1 of Fall Camp as he continues finishing up an internship. Kelly was upbeat about Emery’s status following Thursday’s practice, not wanting to rush him back.

“He’s in great shape. He’s done everything needed. He needed to finish an internship today. He will be with us [on Friday],” Kelly said following Day 1 of camp.

Prior to camp, Kelly provided an update on Emery’s status at SEC Media Days:

“He is in the process of being cleared. I think we’ve got another thing we have to get through, but I feel really good that it's imminent and he’s going to be with us when camp starts.”

Now, he'll be back with the program on Friday.

Ka’Morreun Pimpton, Kaleb Jackson Look The Part

If there was one eye-opening freshman on Thursday it was tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton. With tremendous size, already at 6-foot-6, 245-pounds, the youngster utilized his physical tools to his advantage on Day 1.

Pimpton went up and over several defenders during one-on-one’s, showcasing his soft hands for a tight end. Moving forward, his blocking will be where he develops, but the receiving abilities of Pimpton are off the charts as a freshman. Impressive first day.

Freshman running back Kaleb Jackson looked like a grown man on Thursday. The Baton Rouge native arrived on campus this summer and immediately took advantage of the resources. A speedy, strong back, it’ll be intriguing to watch his development over time. On Day 1, the youngster looked solid.
