LSU Practice Report: Notes From Day 2 of Fall Camp

The Tigers continue their preseason practice as Day 2 wraps up in Baton Rouge.

LSU hit the practice field for Day 2 of Fall Camp with Brian Kelly’s program beginning to get in a groove in Baton Rouge.

It was a hot, humid morning with the media allowed to observe practice for the first 15 minutes on Friday.

Here are a few notes from Day 2 of camp:

Quarterbacks

  • Jayden Daniels continues progressing in pushing the ball vertically. An area the Tigers QB1 struggled in a year ago, Daniels is showing advancements in his deep ball and showcased a few downfield dimes on Friday.
  • Garrett Nussmeier looks sharp. The third-year Tiger is growing into his own and looks more than ready for when his number is called. Nussmeier has run with both the 1’s and 2’s during camp so far, showing great command with both groups.
  • Rickie Collins is still growing as a player. Despite some of his passes being all over the place, the freshman has shown his mechanics improving on a day-by-day basis.

Running Backs

  • John Emery returned to the practice field for the Tigers on Friday after being away from the program for the entire offseason. Emery missed all of spring and now returns after reaching his academics requirements.
  • Logan Diggs was seen being coached up by Frank Wilson for quite some time. As he gets used to LSU’s system, it’s clear the role he’ll take on this season.
  • Josh Williams continues getting first team run and Armoni Goodwin is slowly getting back to his old ways after recovering from his knee injury.
  • Freshmen Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson have looked the part. Holly has been with the program since January and is looking polished to this point.

Wide Receivers

  • Malik Nabers has looked excellent two days in. It’s a small sample size, but the veteran wideout has noticeably looked more poised.
  • Brian Thomas Jr. and Kyren Lacy are growing as players still. Both have the chance to take that next step in 2023 and they’re both getting after it. Thomas Jr. flashed his high vertical on Friday during offensive runs while Lacy works in the slot.
  • Landon Ibieta has rotated in and out with the 1’s and 2’s but has looked healthy when given opportunity. He’ll be a big-time piece to what LSU’s second unit does in 2023.
  • Aaron Anderson will be key in what this offense does. He's worked in the slot through two days and it's evident the speedster will be ready sooner rather than later.

Offensive Line

  • Will Campbell (LT), Garrett Dellinger (LG), Charles Turner (Center), Miles Frazier (LG) and Emery Jones (LT) have been the first team group.
  • Marlon Martinez will battle for a starting center job during fall camp and has taken his fair share of reps. On Friday, he once again was seen getting reps with both the 1’s and 2’s.
  • Bo Bordelon, Zalance Heard and a few other youngsters are battling in the trenches. Heard was seen getting reps with the two's on Friday.

Defensive Line

  • With Jimmy Lindsey absent, this unit hasn’t skipped a beat. On Friday, Dashawn Womack was seen working with the defensive ends after putting on some noticeable size.
  • Ovie Oghoufo, Bradyn Swinson and Jaxon Howard will see more of a JACK role this season, and on Friday, they primarily filled that slot.
  • Quency Wiggins and Saivion Jones looked sharp once again. It’ll be interesting to see what type of role Wiggins gets with the depth of this group but the youngster once again looked the part.

Linebackers

  • There isn’t too much to report with this group. Harold Perkins, Omar Speights and Greg Penn III have held it down through two days and have been efficient and diligent in their work.
  • Whit Weeks will be a player to monitor during his time in Baton Rouge. He’s looked phenomenal for a freshman and has shown flashes of what can be in the purple and gold. Tremendous upside.

Defensive Backs

  • Zy Alexander and Duce Chestnut continue getting major reps together through two days. Again, it’s a small sample size, but both have been receiving a majority of the first team reps with Laterrance Welch and and Denver Harris rotating in as well.
  • Greg Brooks and Major Burns are an interesting tandem at the safety position. On Friday, Javien Toviano worked exclusively at safety as he competes for snaps this season. He’s looked sharp since spring camp and continues his rise during fall camp.
  • Sage Ryan has held it down at nickel, but Toviano could also be in the mix for reps there as he progresses.
  • Absentee: Kylin Jackson
