LSU took the practice field for Day 4 of Fall Camp as the Tigers gear up for week two of preseason practice.

It was another hot, humid day in Baton Rouge where Brian Kelly’s group started practice in the indoor facility for the first eight periods before heading to the outside field for the final 12 media viewing periods.

On Monday, a fight broke out during camp with Harold Perkins and Kyren Lacy playing major roles in what happened on the practice field. Lacy was sent to the locker room and Perkins didn’t take another snap during practice.

Malik Nabers was also sent to the locker room with Lacy due to his involvement. Brian Kelly addressed the team after the “brawl” and expressed his frustration. It was an ugly scene, but the Tigers carried on through the final few periods.

Here are a few notes from Day 4 of camp:

Quarterbacks

  • Jayden Daniels is taking that next step as a leader and it’s shown with his relationship with Rickie Collins. The two remain in sync, and on Monday, it was much of the same. Daniels delivered a couple of deep balls during 11-on-11 where he showed his much improved touch. It’ll be interesting to monitor his growth moving forward during camp.
  • Garrett Nussmeier is never afraid to take shots down the field and on Monday it was the same story. He’s growing in his decision-making, but his deep ball certainly steals the show. Nussmeier delivered a beautiful ball down the right side of the field to Chris Hilton during the 11-on-11 portion of practice outside.

Running Backs

  • Logan Diggs continues taking first team reps during the 11-on-11 live periods. Along with Diggs, it’s Josh Williams rotating in and Armoni Goodwin earning his fair share of snaps.
  • Diggs has been improving on a day-by-day basis and Frank Wilson remains in his ear throughout practice. Wilson knows the role Diggs will play and it’s evident during the first few days of camp.
  • Josh Williams will get his fair share of snaps as he battles for starting running back duties. He’s a player Kelly can depend on and he’s taking on a leadership role for this program.

Offensive Line

  • Will Campbell (LT), Garrett Dellinger (LG), Charles Turner (Center), Miles Frazier (RG) and Emery Jones (RT) continue taking first team reps with Marlon Martinez battling for starting center duties.
  • Zalance Heard received second team reps once again for Brad Davis’s offensive line as he continues making an impact. Sources within the program continue expressing how pleased they’ve been with Heard so far.
  • Look for the youngsters to continue making an impact on the second team. It’s a young group that is making the most of their chances.

Defensive Line

  • Quency Wiggins will take on a major role for this program in 2023. He’s developed his body and continues taking first team snaps for LSU. On Monday, it was much of the same with Saivion Jones lined up on the other side.
  • Wiggins, Mekhi Wingo, Maason Smith and Saivion Jones could be a lethal force this season, but this group remains a work in progress.
  • Dashawn Womack is a name LSU fans should be familiar with sooner rather than later. The former 5-star has shined during the first few days, coming up with a “sack” on Garrett Nussmeier on Monday. He’ll take on a JACK role for this program, but somehow, he must be involved in 2023 as a freshman.

Linebackers

  • This group is just about set in stone with Omar Speights and Harold Perkins looking to be a dynamic duo moving forward. Along with the two, Greg Penn III will make a major impact. A name many forget about at times, Penn will be a glue guy in 2023. On Monday, he displayed his versatility during 11-on-11.
  • Perkins was involved in the scuffle on Monday that sent this program into a brawl during live periods. Perkins didn’t take another snap on the day. Kelly was seen reprimanding his superstar after the incident and didn’t take it lightly on him.

Defensive Backs

  • Ohio State transfer JK Johnson was seen on a scooter during practice on Monday and his timetable to return is to be determined, though a source reiterates he will be out for some time.
  • Safety Major Burns was involved in the scuffle on Monday with Kelly also reprimanding his starting safety. It was difficult to see what started the brawl, but Burns, Perkins, Denver Harris, Lacy and Nabers played a major role in what went down.
  • As for the rotations, Zy Alexander and Duce Chestnut are looking the part through three media viewings and Denver Harris is earning his reps. It was never going to be a situation where Harris was handed a spot, and so far, he’s earning them while working with the second team.
  • Andre Sam has been impressive. The transfer defensive back came up with a big interception on Garrett Nussmeier during 11-on-11's.
  • With JK Johnson out for an extended period of time, Javien Toviano and others will have the chance to earn snaps. On Monday, that was proven true with the youngsters getting their chance, including Laterrance Welch, who continues taking that next step.

Injury Report

JK Johnson was seen in a soft cast while rolling around on a scooter. The Ohio State transfer will miss some time after what appears to be a lower leg injury.

Brian Thomas Jr. is battling a minor injury and the team is being cautious with his return. Thomas was seen on the field later in the practice.

Greg Brooks is started off the practice with the team before departing with the medical staff shortly after. The Tigers starting safety returned but did not participate in practice.
