LSU Practice Report: Notes From Day 9 of Fall Camp

In this story:

Following a Sunday recovery day, LSU got back on the practice fields on Monday for Day 9 of Fall Camp work.

It was another scorching hot day in Baton Rouge, but it didn’t stop this program from maximizing their chances with camp in full swing.

A deep dive into Monday’s practice:

Quarterbacks

  • Jayden Daniels missed a few throws on Monday after a big-time Saturday practice, but connected with Brian Thomas Jr. on several occasions. The intermediate throws were on display on Monday with Daniels continuing to take strides in the right direction in this area.
  • Garrett Nussmeier had an inconsistent day from what the media got to see. He and Chris Hilton Jr. continue looking like a duo for the future, but consistency will be key for both.
  • Rickie Collins dropped a dime to John Emery on a wheel route down the left side of the field for a score during 7-on-7 work.
  • Limited notes on quarterbacks today.

Running Backs

  • Frank Wilson divided the snaps all over the place on Monday. We saw Noah Cain, Tre Bradford and Trey Holly all take first team reps.
  • Cain got a majority of the reps during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work with Bradford also getting into the mix.
  • Holly took a few first team reps during individual drills.
  • Josh Williams, Logan Diggs and Armoni Goodwin were absent during drills. Williams and Diggs were seen in the corner on the bikes.
  • John Emery made a beautiful catch on a wheel route down the left sideline to end the 17th period, resulting in a touchdown during 7-on-7.

Wide Receivers

  • Chris Hilton Jr. hopped in a few first team reps on Monday but it wasn’t a significant number.
  • Malik Nabers took a reverse during 11-on-11 work. Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said they’d utilize Nabers in a variety of ways and it was on display on Monday.
  • Kyle Parker returned to the field.
  • Brian Thomas had a few big plays with Jayden Daniels at the helm.

Tight Ends

  • The battle for TE2 duties will be interesting over the next few weeks. Ka’Morreun Pimpton and Mac Markway continue taking second team reps with Connor Gilbreath and Jackson McGohan also getting in the mix.
  • McGohan had a bad drop during 7-on-7 but made up for it later on a connection from Garrett Nussmeier.

Offensive Line

  • Maryland transfer Mason Lunsford continues taking first team reps at right guard. A rotation, for the most part, has been (from left to right): Will Campbell, Garrett Dellinger, Charles Turner, Mason Lunsford and Emery Jones.
  • Marlon Martinez continues battling for starting center duties.
  • Zalance Heard is with the second team as seen again on Monday.

Defensive Line

  • Maason Smith went down for a short time on Saturday, limping off the field under his own power, but returned to the field on Monday. Smith was seen on the bike in the corner.
  • Jacobian Guillory will take on a role in some way or another for the defensive line. He was seen taking first team reps alongside Mekhi Wingo with Smith off to the side today.
  • Ovie Oghoufo is versatile and showed it again on Monday.
  • Not too many notes from this group today.

Linebackers

  • West Weeks has all the tools to be a successful linebacker in the SEC. On Monday, he showcased his versatility, dropped back and deflected a few passes.
  • Omar Speights and Harold Perkins remain a consistent one-two punch.
  • Small sample size on Monday for the linebackers, but they displayed consistency during 7-on-7 work.

Cornerbacks

  • Ashton Stamps’ stock is rising at a rapid rate. He took more first team reps on Monday and has been as impressive as it gets in the cornerback room.
  • Zy Alexander and Duce Chestnut remain the starting corners with Stamps getting major run of his own.
  • Laterrance Welch is taking reps with the 2’s while Denver Harris appears to be No. 5 on the depth chart.
  • On the subject of Denver Harris, he was not seen at practice on Monday.

Safeties

  • Andre Sam is an SEC safety. The Tulane/Marshal safety is getting work with the first team and is making the most of his chances.
  • Major Burns came up with a deflection during 7-on-7 work and is slowing getting back in a groove.
  • Greg Brooks is still getting healthy, but got his fair share of reps during both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work.
