Meet the Aggies: An inside look into LSU's final non-conference team of the 2019 season

Where: Logan, Utah
2019 record: 3-1
Head Coach: Gary Anderson (3-1, first year)
About the offense
The Aggies are led by quarterback Jordan Love on offense, who LSU coach Ed Orgeron called a future first-round pick on Monday. Love has passed for 1,207 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions in 2019 while averaging over 38 points per game.
"Very smart, knows where to go with the ball," Orgeron said. "He's only gotten sacked three times this year. Quick release; can avoid pressure; is able to run the zone read. He's definitely a first-round pick, I do believe, in the NFL and will play in the NFL for a long time. He's an extremely good quarterback in all areas."
The Aggies are also led, at least statistically, by running backs Jaylen Warren and Gerold Bright, who have combined for 636 yards and six touchdowns, and wide receiver Siaosi Mariner, who has hauled in 22 catches for 305 yards and two touchdowns.
Utah State head coach Gary Anderson said in a press conference this week that LSU provides a number of challenges on defense, particularly because of the depth the Tigers have at most positions.
"You don’t look out there and say, ‘Hey, there is just an average guy, we can work to take advantage of him.’ They fly around, they play hard, they have high expectations to play hard defense every single week," Anderson said. "You just don’t see a bunch of missed assignments, you don’t see a bunch of errors, and you don’t see a lack of communication for the most part. They’re used to playing against a fast-paced offense, which, that probably helps them and will help them against us I’m sure. Playing fast isn’t something they’re not used to. Hopefully, we can get into those situations and cause some confusion, that’s always the goal, but they’ll have the same goal for us.”
About the defense
The Aggies are No. 57 in total defense through four weeks of the season, allowing 4.6 yards per play and 377 yards per game. Utah State is led defensively by junior linebacker David Woodward, who has registered 55 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss along with a sack and fumble recovery in four games.
Anderson had high praise for Montgomery's talent, comparing him to one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
"David has his own style, you know, and he plays within a style," Anderson said. "David is like Bobby Wagner. Bobby was, I don’t want to say a freelancer, but Bobby was able to go ahead and do some things where you might not be able to say on the board, ‘Well, you’re supposed to be here, but you were over there and you made this play.’ His instincts are a big part of playing linebacker. We’ve tried to build a lot of the defense around his abilities."
The LSU offense has had no issue moving the ball against any opponent this season, averaging a nation-high 58.7 points per game, with the lowest score on the season coming against Texas with 45 points.
Yet, the Aggie defense comes in with some momentum, holding their last three opponents to a combined 48 points, including a 34-24 win over Colorado State in week five.
