LSU Transfer Portal: Priority Targets to Monitor

Tigers looking to add depth to certain areas, a look into three Louisiana natives to know.

Brian Kelly and Co. could look to add a few players via the NCAA Transfer Portal over the next few weeks. We’ve seen this coaching staff dish out a few offers, and with depth at a few position groups being a concern, the Tigers could go out and add a few guys.

Which position groups could LSU target? Who’s on their radar?

Here are a few names to know:

Logan Diggs - Running Back - Notre Dame

Louisiana native Logan Diggs entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday after two seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The elite-level running back will have a number of schools contacting him as the second portal window comes to a close, but could Brian Kelly and LSU push for the Boutte, La. product?

Diggs is fresh off of his best season with Notre Dame. After rushing for 821 rushing yards on a team-high 165 carries, while scoring four touchdowns and averaging five yards per carry, Diggs is a hot name on the market.

We’ve seen Kelly and his staff reel in Louisiana natives who have entered the portal, in fact it’s what Kelly looks for in the portal, and Diggs could be much of the same.

The 6-foot, 214-pounder will have two years of eligibility remaining with his next destination, and with the portal window closed for entry, could the Tigers make a splash to finalize their running back room?

Trey Amos - Cornerback - Louisiana

LSU swooped in and offered Amos along with Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Illinois, Miami and Michigan State, among others once entering the portal on Monday. Within the first hour of putting his name in the portal, Amos had schools from all over the country extending scholarships.

The Louisiana native receiving an offer from LSU was expected, but Florida will be another school to monitor for the services of Amos.

Gators Head Coach Billy Napier recruited Amos out of high school and reeled him over to Lafayette, La. where the two saw immediate success, but now with Napier out in Gainesville, we could see Florida make a big push.

A class of 2020 product, Amos flew under the radar coming out of high school. He attended New Iberia (La.) Catholic but never quite saw his recruitment take off. A last second offer from Tennessee could have swayed him to the SEC, but he remained loyal to Napier and his vision in Lafayette.

During his time with the Ragin’ Cajuns, Amos saw his game improve each season. The 6-foot-1, 197-pounder appeared in 34 games over three seasons with Louisiana. He totaled 59 total tackles with 2.5 for loss, one interception and 14 defended passes, being used primarily as a cornerback, but saw snaps at nickel/safety as well.

The Tigers have seen success in utilizing the portal and securing players from in-state programs, specifically the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Kelly reeled in former Ragin’ Cajuns wide receiver Kyren Lacy last offseason along with defensive back Mekhi Garner. Garner stepped in as a Day 1 starter and Lacy looks poised for a big second season in Baton Rouge.

Keon Coleman - Wide Receiver - Michigan State

Coleman’s decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal came as a surprise to many. The electrifying wideout was set to be the Spartans WR1 this season, but electing to take his talents elsewhere, he’ll have a long list of potential suitors, including LSU.

A Louisiana native, the Tigers will make a big-time push for the elite athlete. After a productive 2022 season with the Sparty’s, Coleman has seen his game takeoff ahead of this season. Coleman led the Spartans in receptions (58), receiving yards (798) and receiving touchdowns (7) in 2022.

The 6-foot-4 wide receiver has multiple years of eligibility remaining, which makes him that much more of an intriguing target for LSU. Brian Kelly has expressed how important it is to reel in guys who can make an impact for the long haul, and for Coleman, he fits the criteria Kelly is looking for.

Coleman will have several elite programs reach out to him, but it’s clear the Tigers will put their foot on the gas to add the physical wideout to their deep receiving corps ahead of the 2023 season. It’ll be a battle for Coleman’s services who is set to visit Florida State this weekend.
