Practice Report: LSU Resumes Spring Camp, Takeaways From The Day

Tigers return from spring break, running backs get some depth back on the field.

Brian Kelly and his LSU Tigers are back from spring break and got back on the practice fields to resume camp. It was a cold, dry morning in Baton Rouge, but it didn’t stop the Tigers from getting after it.

The running back depth continues to be a concern for this squad during camp but as a whole the Tigers certainly have their fair share of bodies at other position groups.

Here are a few takeaways from practice:

Running Backs Return

On the first day of spring camp, the Tigers’ running back room was sparse. With just two scholarship backs on the field in Noah Cain and early-enrollee Trey Holly, it was certainly a major takeaway, but LSU returned some production on Tuesday.

Both Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin hit the practice field without pads, but to get the pair of dynamic backs on the field with the program is a major win for the Tigers, even if it isn't as participants. Coach Kelly has said Williams will return before Goodwin even if it is without contact. Goodwin will return for fall camp.

As for the two scholarship backs in Holly and Cain, both have looked extremely energetic through the two media viewings of practice. Holly has looked physically impressive for a youngster, but his quick first step has been something to note.

A look into the running backs working with Jayden Daniels and the quarterbacks:

Garrett Nussmeier Looks Sharp, Quarterback Layout

Nussmeier underwent a minor “corrective” procedure during the offseason but is ramping it up in camp, looking healthy and not skipping a beat. On Tuesday, he appeared to be a full go with both Jayden Daniels and Rickie Collins.

For Daniels, he went back home to the West coast for spring break where he worked with a few trainers to sharpen his skill set. Once back in Baton Rouge for Tuesday’s practice, he’s looked the part. He’s been vocal and working side-by-side with quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan.

It was a short media viewing on Tuesday, but in the minimal time on the practice fields it was a good sign to see both Daniels and Nussmeier getting after it and competing.

Defensive Backs, Javien Toviano Turning Heads

Early-enrollee Javien Toviano and Southeastern Louisiana transfer Zy Alexander appeared to be running with the ones along with Texas A&M transfer Denver Harris getting significant run as well.

For Toviano, he has the chance to be used in more of a hybrid role for the Tigers this season with so much depth at defensive back. For Alexander, his experience is a piece of his game that this coaching staff can utilize in a big way given they’ve retooled this entire group.

It’s noteworthy just how many gifted defensive backs the Tigers have in their arsenal and it was on full display on Tuesday. Through the first few weeks of spring camp it’ll be imperative LSU gains continuity with this unit.
