Recruits React: Prospects Upbeat Following Visits to LSU

Brian Kelly and Co. hosted a number of the country's top 2024 prospects last weekend, including a current Texas commit.

It’s been a busy stretch in Baton Rouge over the last few weekends with LSU hosting a number of elite prospects to campus before February’s dead period gets underway.

From 2024 and 2025 commitments to high-priority targets taking in Death Valley, it’s been an eventful run on the trail for this staff.

The recruiting dead period (January 30 - February 28) is here and this program made a statement before it got underway. It’ll be a “no contact” period, making the last few weekends important when it comes to the 2024 recruiting class.

Kelly and his staff hosted several commitments, but it didn’t stop there. LSU brought in Louisiana native, and 4-star DL Kolaj Cobbins to campus, who took to social media to rave about his visit.

Along with Cobbins, the Tigers brought in current Texas commit Hunter Moddon. The ATH (WR/DB) has proven how gifted he is on the gridiron, but is also talented in track.

LSU has their foot on the gas for the Lone Star State native, and after a successful visit, could see traction gaining in that area.

Here’s a look into what the visitors are putting on social media as they rave about their visits:

Maurice Williams - Safety - 2024 Commit

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder developed a strong relationship with defensive coordinator Matt House and defensive backs coaches Kerry Cooks and Robert Steeples. A 4-star, top 100 prospect, his recruitment has exploded this spring.

Williams was on campus for an unofficial visit with the Tigers over the summer where he ultimately felt at home. Ready to commit this summer and shut the process down was on his mind for quite some time, leading him to pledge to Brian Kelly and his staff.

With his mother’s side of the family residing in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana, it didn’t take long for him to feel comfortable leaving Texas and committing to LSU. Visiting both Ohio State and Texas this summer, LSU took charge of Williams’ recruitment rather quickly.

His visit over the summer with LSU saw one-on-one time with both Coach Kelly and Coach Cooks, making him feel right where he needed to be. Ending the visit with a workout with Kerry Cooks, it added more fuel to the fire to commit to the Tigers.

Jaylen Bell - Cornerback - 2025 Commit

The 5-foot-10, 150-pound corner is the latest prospect to continue the Grayson High School pipeline for the Tigers. Along with Bell, LSU has also added commitments from 2023 cornerback Michael Daugherty before enrolling early at LSU and 2024 defensive back Zion Ferguson, who both also played for Grayson High School.

Bell holds offers from the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Miami, South Carolina and numerous others before. Shutting down the recruitment process early in his high school career, it’ll be some time until Bell is suited up in the purple and gold, but the upside he attains gives this program a dynamic athlete for the future.

Brian Kelly and his staff have harped on the importance of developing relationships early with prospects, and after developing a Top-5 2024 class already, their impact is proving to be significant.

Hunter Moddon - ATH - 2024

Moddon has proven to be one of the top athletes in the 2024 class. Although the youngster is currently committed to Texas, it's clear he's keeping his options open after a successful visit to Baton Rouge.

If LSU were to flip Moddon, who has the ability to play both sides of the ball at wide receiver and defensive back, it would immediately boost this 2024 class to new heights. A dual-sport athlete, Moddon also excels in track.

Other visitors who were in for the weekend:

  • 2025 safety Jacorey Watson (Maurice Williams’ teammate and No. 1 ATH)
  • Kolaj Cobbins (2024 4-star DL. Recently included LSU in his Top 6 schools. Louisiana native)
