Miami Hurricanes Transfer Portal Trio Recognized By National Publication

Will these three Hurricanes transfers make the team better in 2024?

Miami plugged some important holes with experienced players in the Transfer Portal.

Writer Tony Thomas from Mike Farrell Sports wrote a new story recognizing Cam Ward, Mishael Powell, and Elijah Alston as "Three Transfers That Will Make Miami Better."

My take:

-Ward was Miami's top quarterback choice from the moment he entered the portal from Washington State in December. The Hurricanes were able to land the 6-2, 223 pound signal caller after he initially announced he would be entering the NFL Draft. He threw for 3,735 yards with 25 touchdowns to 7 interceptions last year.

-Powell is an addition that we probably don't talk about enough. The graduate transfer will add experience to a Miami safety room that just lost top duo Kam Kinchens and James Williams to the NFL Draft. Powell started 14 games for the Washington Huskies last year, including the CFP national championship game. He recorded three interceptions last season and took one of those 89 yards for a touchdown.

-Alston should offer a tremendous boost to an already potent Hurricanes pass rush. He recorded six sacks, an interception, and a pair of forced fumbles at Marshall last season. Alston should hit the ground running at Miami since he's reuniting with Lance Guidry, his DC two seasons ago with the Thundering Herd.

I expect others not listed in Thomas' article to make significant contributions as transfers next season. Center Zach Carpenter will definitely start. I expect transfer DT CJ Clark to likely fill the starting role left by NFL-bound Leonard Taylor. Safety Savion Riley will have an opportunity to start next to Powell.

Miami has added nine transfers so far, and currently rank 33rd in the 247Sports portal rankings. The portal will reopen on April 15th, giving Miami an opportunity to add players again if they choose to do so. Wide receiver might be a position of need.
