Ohio State Transfer Roddy Gayle Jr. To Visit Michigan

The Wolverines could pluck guard Roddy Gayle Jr. from Ohio State if all goes well on his upcoming visit to campus.

In what has turned into an expansive transfer portal search, the Wolverines are pursuing Ohio State transfer guard Roddy Gayle Jr. according to multiple outlets. Originally, CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reported on April 10 that Gayle had received interest from a swath of schools, including Michigan and Georgia, and that he’d be working on setting up a visit to the latter two schools.

With so many programs in the mix, U-M head coach Dusty May acted quickly in setting up an on-campus visit with Gayle for Friday. However, Gayle was also slated to check out Crieghton before heading to Ann Arbor per Jeff Goodman, so the Wolverines will need to deliver a strong presentation and will have the last word out of that two-team tandem.

Last season, Gayle was an important part to the Buckeyes’ squad and appeared in every single game for OSU in the 2023-24 campaign, starting all but one. Gayle finished third on the Buckeyes in scoring with 13.5 points per game, supplementing that production with 4.5 rebounds and 3 assists on average as well.

Even though Gayle was a featured member of Ohio State’s team last season and would likely be primed for a growing role, Michigan has as much, if not more playing time to offer. Additionally, Dusty May is steadily filling out his coaching staff with reports of Saint Mary’s associate head coach Justin Joyner and former Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton Jr joining the Wolverines. That means when Gayle visits Michigan on Friday, coach May will have an exciting plan to pitch with a couple crucial elements to that plan— Joyner and Boynton— now in place.

As a recruit in the 2022 class, Gayle ranked No. 50 overall according to 247Sports.com and was a top five shooting guard for that cycle. Now in the transfer portal, Gayle checks in as the No. 34 player available and as a four-star transfer candidate.

Over the last two seasons, Gayle has grown mightily as a player for the Buckeyes. He didn’t play a ton in his freshman season, but was trusted to run the offense a lot last year, showcasing his slashing ability, finishing around the rim and skill in scoring through contact. So, Gayle is an intriguing prospect with talent and Big Ten experience who could help shoulder the load for U-M’s squad next season if his upcoming visit to Ann Arbor goes well.
