I’ll start with the positives.

 WE WON THE GAME
Our 3rd team offense is better than Cincy’s 3rd team defense
DT, Langston should be moved to Cody’s spot
Cory Smith should be moved to Kalimba’s spot
J.T. and Orlovsky looked pretty good, once they had a couple of series behind them (I like the way J.T. can scramble)
We have plenty of very good wide receivers

Now for the bad news

(I’ll try to be nice here) Our 1st team offense (mostly the O-line) and the entire defense needs lots, lots, lots of improvement
What happened to the run game?
Shawn Cody should never be put on the line without Shaun Rogers
Kalimba Edwards should be shipped to China to help repaint the American toys with unleaded paint
Never heard Redding’s name, Boss Bailey’s name, nor Paris Lenon’s name…. not a good sign

I was really excited to see the Lions win tonight. I don't care if it's only preseason, I'll always take a victory and be happy with it. Here are a few of my observations from the game:

The 1st string d-line was alarmingly bad. Granted, Rogers & White were missing, but they've got to do better than that. I did like what I saw from backups Langston Moore & Corey Smith. IAF had his moments, too. If Kalimba doesn't show something in a hurry, he's got to get benched. IAF is going to be good and I really think Corey Smith is underrated. He has a knack for playmaking that can't be taught.

The linebackers have to make more plays. I loved watching Ernie run around like a madman, though.

I thought the secondary was pretty shaky, but much of that can be blamed on the poor pass rush. Sure, they have to play better, but they need some help! Keith Smith stood out with a couple of nice plays, at least.

The defense struggled overall, but they do look faster as they swarm to the ball and they did deliver a couple of solid big hits, particularly the one Bullocks put on Chad Johnson.

I think the backup QB issue has been overblown and it's not just because of what we saw tonight. For one thing, I like Martz to develop one or both of these guys because he's done it with so many previously unknown guys before. Secondly, McCown isn't that great. He's a great guy with good talent, but he wasn't a huge loss. Sure, he's got more experience than JT & Dan, but does that necessarily make him a better QB? Josh is a gunslinger who turns it over too much. JT looked similar to him in that regard tonight. I didn't like some of the decisions he made (he has to be more careful with the ball), but he made some nice plays and showed a very quick release, too. Dan has a strong, accurate arm and played an excellent game tonight. I'm anxious to see if he can do it against better competition.

The WR's were terrific. The starters and backups all looked good and the timing looked crisp. It was great to see CJ get involved, too.

It was hard to evaluate the RB's because I thought the run blocking was sub-par (the pass-blocking appeared to be better than the run blocking). I did see enough of Tatum Bell to say that I really like his acceleration. TJ looks powerful as ever, just needs to protect the ball.

The coaching staff has done a nice job of getting them to cut down on dumb mistakes. I thought 7 penalties for 40 yards was actually pretty good for the 1st preseason game, at least compared to what we've seen in the past. Also, they didn't blow a bunch of timeouts, either, like they have in some past preseason openers.

A lot of areas still need work, but I think things are looking up. It was great to see the Lions play again and I hope that they can continue to improve and work towards building a winning team.
