Basketball and fish jello?

Hello again! I’m back and ready for action. My trip to northern Minnesota was nice, but it was COLD! The most significant thing I did was try lutefisk at my new family's holiday gathering on New Year’s Day. If you’ve never heard of lutefisk, think fish jello, and you’ll be in the right track. I was able to eat three bites and everyone said that was pretty good, considering how many people told me I was crazy for considering a few bites. To me, it’s silly that people who descended from the Vikings won’t eat a little fish. It’s not like it’s a cheap delicacy either! Ok, enough about how horrible lutefisk is, let’s get into some basketball!
Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week
Bay City All Saints 77 Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy 11
Sometimes I forget SASA has a basketball team. It’s more of a school for gifted students and a fantastic option to the normal high school. Bay City All Saints are pretty good in most sports. It must be tough to be blown out by 66 points. The All Saints were up 26-2 after the first quarter and SASA only scored four points in the second half against the Bay City reserves. I’ll have to go tease my neighbor girl who goes to SASA. My question is who was the high scorer for SASA?
They Have A Team?
Did you know that Mackinaw Island has a basketball team? Not one, but two of them! They have a girl’s basketball team for the first time since 1990. The school is very small (28 students) so they allow 8th graders to play varsity sports. Coach Jim Fisher is hoping to defend his Northern Lights League Boys Basketball Championship with his nine returning players. Schools in this league play a little differently though. Teams like Mackinaw Island and Beaver Island can’t just hop on the bus and go to the games. Typically they play two game series; one on Friday night, then the team spends the night in the gym and will play the second game on Saturday morning. The Northern Lights League consists of Mackinaw Island (28 students), Beaver Island (33 students), Grand Marais (27 students), Paradise (31 students), and Hannahville (the *big* school with 51 students). None of the teams do much in the districts because of school size, but heck, they just want to play basketball!
Wait! We need a few more minutes!
In one of the lowest scoring games as of late, Peck beat Kingston in overtime 32-28. This game must have been a great defensive game, or a terrible offensive game. Kingston coach Mike Rea said his team played good man to man defense. The score at the half was 11-14. Josh Campbell of Kingston made a three point shot with 3.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Two layups was the difference in overtime with Peck taking the W.
High Scoring Game of the Week
Britton-Macon 90 Whitmore Lake 89
179 points for two teams is the exact opposite of the game I talked about above. No one wanted to report on the game, so I don’t know who the high scorers were. I bet it was a heck of a game to watch though!
The Hill beats The High in round one.
Monday night, #5 ranked Saginaw Arthur Hill beat #1 ranked Saginaw High 63 to 56. Even though both teams play in the Saginaw Valley League, this game was considered non-conference. The Lumberjacks came out swinging and the Trojans caught one in the jaw in the first quarter, falling behind 27-11. The Hill executed their game of going right at Mr. Basketball candidate Draymond Green and got him into foul trouble early, forcing him to the bench. Saginaw High shot terribly from the floor (24-74) and from the line (5-16). Latreze Mushatt scored 19 for Arthur Hill and their quarterback, Mike Schaaf, scored 10. These teams play their league game against two weeks from Thursday.
