Boy’s basketball is rolling through January and quickly approaching February. We all know that February is the shortest month of the year and then we just storm into March when the District Tournament begins (March 8th). This week had a lot of great action. Five teams went over the century mark and there were plenty of very close games as well. With that said, let’s take a look at last week’s action.

Low Score of the Week

Plymouth 33 Westland John Glenn 32 (65 points)

This is the type of game I just love. It was close throughout, and it all came down to one shot. Mike Nadratowski scored nine points, but none bigger than the three pointer with 8.7 seconds left. Future Spartan football player Jeremy Langford scored 14 for Westland John Glenn.

Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week

Detroit Midtown Academy 80 Pontiac Academy for Excellence 22 (58 points)

Midtown Academy ran away with this one. Terell Owens, Kyle Rice, and Allen Sherril each scored 17 points for Midtown. As for Pontiac Academy For Excellence? Let’s just say that they do much better in the classroom than they did in this basketball game.

High Score of the Week/Century Club Part Five

Petersburg-Summerfield 109 Whitmore Lake 103 (212 points)

Whoa! Two teams over 100 points in a game! That must have been a pure defensive struggle (sarcasm). Eric Cogan scored 54 points in the winning effort. P-S tied the game at 92 with 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Then in overtime, they outscored Whitmore Lake 17-11. Alex Cattley scored 26 points for Whitmore Lake while Andrew Kolic chipped in 20.

Century Club Part Six

Charlevoix 100 Elk Rapids 91

It took two overtimes, but Charlevoix came up with the W. Keegan LeBlance scored 25 (including the game tying three point shot in regulation) while Andrew Plude got 22. Dylan Putnam scored 16 points, pulled down 14 rebounds, assisted on six scores, blocked three shots, and also stole the ball three times. What this game boiled down to is that Elk Rapids wasn’t able to make enough free throws to win.

Century Club Part Seven

Holland Christian 108 Wyoming Park 91

With the game turning into a blowout, Coach Mike Phelps put in his reserves. That’s when Wyoming Park stormed back and made the game interesting. Coach Phelps was forced to reinsert his starters to stop the rally. Tyler Dykstra scored a career high 33 points for Holland Christian. Brett Konyndyk scored 19 after missing two games with a concussion. Steve Malcolm scored 28 for Wyoming Park while Devonta Guydon added 24. They hit nine three point shots in the game against a taller squad in Holland Christian.

Century Club Part Eight

Ithaca 107 Saginaw Valley Lutheran 89

After scoring 60 points in the first half, the Yellowjackets cruised to the highest point total since Coach Bob Anderson got there 17 years ago. He was way more excited about being 5-0 in league play and in control of the Tri Valley West Conference. Creed Stapleton scored 35 and Alex Oosterhoff had 27, eight rebounds, and eight assists. James Rogers led Valley Lutheran with 26 points. Tyler Kluck added 19.

Century Club Part Nine

Mason County Eastern 104 Pentwater 72

This victory pushed Mason County Eastern to a 7-0 record and 6-0 in the Western Michigan D League. Kyle Purple poured in 37 points. Josh Bonnett scored 17 points, five rebounds, five steals, and five assists. Eric Purple also scored 17, but he had nine rebounds, two steals and an assist. Chris Shoup had 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals for Pentwater. Cody Stotler also scored 11 points and stole three basketballs.
