Boys Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season
It’s here, baby! We’ve waited a long time to get back to the high school basketball playoffs. Monday starts district play for schools and teams could be in a one-and-done situation if they aren’t careful. Some seniors are getting one last chance; one last dream of basketball glory that will give them a lifetime of memories. Not all can be champions, but winning a game and winning in life are two different things. Basketball should teach young men and women about teamwork. Sometimes, what may give one person glory by putting themselves before the team is very detrimental to how a team functions. If you want individual glory, be a bowler or a golfer. A basketball team is only as good as the sum of its parts. Now that I’ve gotten a little philosophical on y’all, let’s get into the games.
High Score of the Week
Flint Powers 97 Grand Blanc 76 (173 points)
Powers is ready to make another run at a state championship this season. Led by Shane Moreland (22 points, seven steals, six rebounds, and four assists), the Chargers won their eighth game in a row. DeMarco Sanders scored 22 points as well to go along with five assists and four steals. For Grand Blanc, Tony Jones had 20 points. Unfortunately, this rivalry ended with this game. Grand Blanc is moving to the Kensington Lakes Activities Association from the Big Nine and won’t have much room on their out of conference schedule.
Low Score of the Week
Gaylord 34 Petoskey 33 (67 points)
The Blue Devils of Gaylord can thank Quinn Woodhouse. He hit a jump shot with only a few seconds remaining on the clock to give them not only a win, but a share of the Big North basketball title (with Cadillac). Woodhouse had 12 points on the night. Petoskey was led by Kevin Starkey, who was able to hit a layup, draw a foul, and make the free throw to give them a one point lead in the closing seconds. Starkey finished with 14 points for the Petoskey Northmen.
Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week
Ann Arbor Central Academy 69 Jackson Home School 18 (51 points)
Poor Jackson Home School! They’ve been in Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week multiple times this season. Ann Arbor Central Academy was led by Sami Shalabi who had 18 points and 12 rebounds in his eight minutes of play.

Combing through basketball scores really makes you realize how many schools there are in the state of Michigan. Many charter schools have basketball teams because equipment is cheap and you don’t need a ton of people.
I thought I would revisit some of the best (and worst) basketball games this season and give them an award. That award is an “atta-boy†from Coach Cottrell himself!
High Score of the Season
Ottawa Lake Whiteford 96 Whitmore Lake 95 (OT) (191 points)
Jake DuPree had 22, including a half court three pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime. Forrest Gorsteffon scored 12 and hit the game winner with six seconds remaining. It must have been a fun game to watch with all that offense!
Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Season
Detroit Middletown Academy 91 Riverside Academy (Dearborn) 16 (78 points)
Wow. They beat you by 78 points. Some teams don’t score 78 points in one night their entire season. At what point does a coach say, “Ok, turn the ball over some so this score isn’t as lopsided.†I guess we won’t know what Coach Lonell Williams was thinking in this game.

Not a high scoring game by any means.
