Delmon gets hit back, with 50 game suspension!

By Justin Mangan

What has happened to the game of baseball? When did it become WWE wrestling? What was once America’s favorite game is now taking a turn for the worse. Think back to the syringes being thrown onto the field at San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds; the spit exchanged from Roberto Alomar to umpire John Hurschbeck; the famous incident of former Tiger Randal Simon striking a person dressed as a hot dog with his bat that was trying to finish a simple race. Occurrences continue to arise that not only tarnish but also damage the game of baseball the most recent incident of a bat being thrown at an umpire. This is a game that was once played for the pure joy, excitement, and more importantly, the love of the game.

Â
Current Devil Ray’s prospect and 2003’s first overall draft pick, Delmon Young, has become the most recent person to be added to the suspension list. Young was suspended for 50 games, the longest suspension given to a player in the history of baseball. The umpire called Young out on the third strike and as Young walked to the bench, he turned and threw the bat at the umpire, who had turned his back to Young.

Â
What must be going through the mind of an athlete? A so-called professional of his trade, what inflicts him to take his anger out on the umpire calling the game? Never before in my history of playing or watching sports have I seen a football helmet, hockey stick, or even a baseball bat, thrown viciously at the man holding the rulings of the game. But now, I can take the bat throwing off my list. As an intern of Hondo’s, we both agree that this kind of action is not acceptable; put more into context, its simply idiotic. People like this don’t deserve to play, let alone get paid for one of the greatest games. If Delmon Young can throw a bat at someone while on camera, it makes me worry what he is capable of off camera. As a fan of his older brother and Detroit Tiger, Dimitri Young, I was once excited about the highly taunted first basemen. But now, it seems he is only the laughing stock.

Â
The suspension: 50 games, plus 50 hours of community service
Does this seem reasonable? The incident occurred on April 26, 2006.  Many say something like this has no place in the game and cannot happen again. If officials hold this in such negative regard, wouldn’t suspending a player for only one third of the season appear like he’s receiving a moderate suspension?  Young should be suspended for more than half the season without pay, and not be allowed onto any ballparks that have affiliation with major leagues.  Yes, that includes the minor leagues too. If this layoff affects him, the only thing I can say is, that’s his problem.
Â
After further analyzing Delmon Young’s actions, I’ve come to realize that this is the kind of performance that a player cannot be truly sorry for. It simply was an incident that displayed the true vulgar and anger of a troubled ball player. The side that he wanted to keep away from the media but failed after entering into only his third season in the minors. This is something that he will regret for the fact that his fan base will be tarnished. It will never be a new day for Delmon Young, for this is an act that he inflicted on himself and will pay the consequences for. Delmon Young may still be held in high regards when he returns on June 19th to play his first game since receiving his suspension. Wherever he goes, whatever field he plays on, he will still be known as “the guy who threw his bat an the home plate umpire,” and for that he may never be forgiven. I for one cannot wait to see the reaction he receives from the fans when he returns.
