“Heads up for Safety,†the Spartan way!

Saturday marked the first time in over a week that the dreary rain clouds cleared the Lansing area. A day where the sun beat down as if to say summer is finally on its way. But the day was also special for another reason. Saturday also marked the fourth annual “Heads up for Safety,†an event that distributed bike helmets to children of all ages. The Sinas Dramis Law Firm held the event which handed out over 400 bike helmets throughout the affair. And as those of us attending found out, this was an event for Spartan fans. The helmets given out were fitted perfectly by having experts on hand working with the children. At times some children tried on up to three helmets to make sure they were the right size. As host of the event, Hondo put on a flashing display to all. While helmets were given out to the children, Hondo filled in with much of the comedic commentary. As a witness of the affair, it was clearly evident of the joy and pride Hondo took in this event, especially being amongst a crowd full of Spartans.By spending the morning and much of the afternoon at the event, Hondo gave away new children’s bikes, Spartan memorabilia, and a grand prize including tickets to a Spartan football and basketball game. The signed memorabilia included Spartan stars of the past such as Charlie Bell, Paul Davis, T.J. Duckett, Maurice Ager, along with several others. While off the stage, Hondo could be seen talking with parents and children and even signing autographs. I would just like to note that on one occasion a fan wearing a Wolverine shirt happened to win the grand prize, and Hondo was not too thrilled about this. As Hondo made out the maize and blue letters on the boy’s shirt, the microphone dropped from his hands in astonishment. You could tell it was difficult for Hondo as he even offered to by the youngster a new shirt, one that had the true Spartan green. There were even several guest appearances by firefighters and police officers as they talked briefly of their jobs. Throughout the whole event emphasis was placed on the importance of bike helmets and the safety they carry. By the end of the day, all children who attended left while still wearing their new helmets, even if they didn’t bring their bikes with them. Also on hand were bike mechanics who throughout the afternoon pumped air into tires and fixed any problems the bikes were experiencing. The event even offered free Cottage Inn pizza along with beverages that were handed out to people in attendance. Saturday truly was a magical day for everyone as smiles filled the lot throughout the day. And we’d once again like to thank the Sinas Dramis Law Firm for helping make this event possible and look forward to another great turnout next year.
