High School Hoops - New Year's Eve Edition

Happy Holidays to all the fans of SpartanNation.com! The action in hoops is just heating up. There have been some nice tournaments/match ups throughout the Christmas Vacation from school.

MHSAA

After the break, games will be headed into league play with eyes toward the state tournament in the beginning of March. In the past two weeks, there have been plenty of high scoring action, big wins, tough losses, and lots of fun. In a side note, Michigan was ranked the 9th best state for high school football in America this past season according to Rivals. Ok, sorry about the football plug, but I thought it was interesting and deserved to be mentioned in this Near Year’s Eve version of the High School Sports Report on SpartanNation.com

Low Score of the Week

Grand Rapids Creston 32 Grandville 27 (59 points)

These low score of the week games are never pretty. Grandville was leading 16-2 in the first quarter, but gave up the win. Fredrick Fields had 12 points in the winning effort. Ben Lanning was the top scorer in the December 29th game but his Bulldogs lost. When all was said and done, Grandville turned the ball over 21 times. That way too many in a low scoring game like this.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Detroit Midtown Academy 98 Dearborn Riverside Academy West 19 (79 points)

Two columns in a row, Dearborn Riverside Academy has made my Blowout of the Week. DeAndre Edwards scored 35 points while his teammate Kyle Rice had 27. Detroit Midtown Academy is 4-0. Meanwhile, Ali Waleed had 12 points for the 0-3 Riverside Academy. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a common occurrence for Dearborn Riverside.

High Score of the Week

Ottawa Lake Whiteford 109 Whitmore Lake 94 (203 points)

Whiteford took a 28-9 lead in the first quarter and outran Whitmore Lake…who scores a ton of points all by themselves. Unfortunately, they never got closer than 10 points of Ottawa Lake again. Colton Judge scored 27 points for Whitmore Lake and Alex Cattley added 25. For Whiteford, Brandon Albright scored 42 and Jake DuPree got 33. The three point shots that WL typically nails were just not falling on December 17th.

Century Club Part Two

Detroit Pershing 105 Saginaw Arthur Hill 97

These teams missed out on being the high score of the week by one point. It was a classic game that was inching closer at the end, but the Doughboys came away with the win. Future USC baller Maurice Jones scored a school record 49 points in the losing effort. Keith Appling, a Spartan in waiting, scored 38 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Juwan Howard scored 20.

Century Club Part Three

Richland Gull Lake 102 Dowagiac 69

Both of these teams prefer to have a track meet break out at their basketball games. Neither play tough defense and prefer to run the court. Trenton Messer led all players with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Adrian Zuidweg had 19 while Xavier Prather, John Jacobson, and Adam Peters all scored 12. Peters and Messer also pulled down 10 rebounds to each get a double-double. Darius Wilson scored 15, Damone Huff had 11, and Tremail Butcher put up 10 in the losing effort.
