Hondo S. Carpenter

Hello folks!
Thanks again for taking the time to read Spartan Nation.

  • Don’t forget to join me each weeknight for Mid-Michigan’s most sports at 6:15 p.m. Monday thru Friday on ABC 53.
  • I am really excited. Tonight my special guest on Hondo’s House is the Lions center/guard Brock Gutierrez. Brock is a great guy and is from Mid Michigan.
  • Now that the Lions first mini-camp has concluded, I have got some interesting assessments after talking to most of the guys and watching practice. 1) The veterans are much more excited then I thought as a whole. They love it and are buying in. 2) I will be surprised if Corey Schlesinger is a Lion on the opening day. I hope so I just would be surprised. 3) I think that Charles and Mike Williams could make it. Williams is frustrated but is a good young man at heart I think. C Rogers just is clueless but he did improve over the three-day event. One prominent Lion told me: Charles seemed to wake up the last half of the camp. 4) Training camp is going to rock. When these guys start hitting each other it is going to get wild. 5) The Lions top three players are a. Mario Williams b. A.J. Hawk and c) Mike Huff. In that order, it one of them or multiples fall they will pick of that order. 6) Look for a monster year from Kevin Jones. 7) I really like personally and as a player Marcus Pollard and I am looking for him to continue to be a great leader on this team. 8) Kelly Butler haters are missing the boat. He is improving and I don’t think he is out of the picture yet. 9) Shaun Cody is going to be the surprise player of the season. It looks like Dan “BIG DADDY” Wilkinson may retire. They don’t want that, but they are leaning to the fact that he probably will. I do not think we will see a let down with Cody. Let me say this about Shaun, on and off the field what a great guy. 10) Kitna and McCown are both high quality character guys and either one will do well here. I will have a lot more to say on the 4/21 Hondo’s House. That will be a special dedicated to the Lions mini camp.
  • Tomorrow at the sacred cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, MSU football has an open practice. Look for a great time, it starts at Noon be there. I will see you then.
  • I am on my way after the news to Comerica to check out the Tigers, which will be great. I enjoy baseball and I am a big Tiger guy. I will have plenty of interviews from Comerica as well as the Palace with the Pistons on Monday’s news.
  • I had two NFL players tell me that they think Nick Saban would love to get Vince Young in the draft if he falls that far.
  • I have been around several NBA players lately and I am not going to name who, but I was privy to a conversation with two of them (not Pistons) who told me that they would be shocked after talking to their friends on the teams if Rick Carlisle is back in Indy and Larry Brown is back with the Knicks.
  • Stephon Marbury told the New York media yesterday that the bad Knicks season rests solely to blame on Larry Brown. Really Stephon, tell us something we didn’t know. That guy won in Detroit but at what cost? He is a cancer to an organization.
  • Look for Larry Brown to use his “sickness” to possibly force the Knicks to buy him out. It is so clear that both parties are not happy and rather then walk away like he should Larry will milk the Knicks. He is cleared to again coach by his Dr.’s but now he will let his assistant tonight and let’s see if he shows up in Detroit. I will be waiting for him and that will be fun.
  • It is only 5 months and 25 days until the MSU vs. UM football game!
  • Happy Good Friday and Easter to you all. If your Jewish I hope you have a nice Passover. Good night.

See you all tonight on the news at 6:15 and Hondo’s House tonight at 7:30 if you’re in the Mid Michigan market.

Thanks everyone, hug your loved ones and remind them that you love them! Peace!
