Hoopin' In The Holidays

Jeffrey Cottrell

The early swing of basketball season is drawing to a close. Christmas is almost upon us and many teams will be going on break. Some teams will play in tournaments around the state against top level competition. Other teams will simply shut it down. Whether your favorite team is playing over the break or not, head out and watch some high school sports. The players love playing in front of crowds and its great entertainment for such a low cost.

High Score of the Week

Flint Southwestern Academy 96 Midland Dow 74 (170 points)

The Knights dropped 48 points in the first half and cruised back home to Flint. DeParris Gordon dropped 23 points while Brandon Thompson contributed 13. Spencer Jennings led all scorers and scored 29 points for Dow.

Low Score of the Week

Blanchard Montabella 39 Breckenridge 23 (62 points)

While Flint Southwestern dropped 48 first half points, Breckenridge went into the half trailing 19-10. The Huskies started slow in the first quarter with two points and slowed down in the fourth when they put in four points. Breckenridge can thank Sebastian San Miguel for his contribution of 14 points, the rest of the team put up nine.

Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week

Bridgeport 83 Essexville Garber 29 (54 point differential)

The Dukes of Garber may have won the football game, but Bridgeport returned the favor on the basketball court. In the first quarter, the Bearcats put up 37 points to take a 37-9 lead. At the half, it was 59-18. Garber only scored one point in the third quarter. Derrick Davis scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Darvin Ham Jr. scored 15 and rebounded six times.

Hoops Tournaments Over The Holidays

There are multiple tournaments around the state over the holiday season which will provide great entertainment at very low prices. One is the Arthur Hill Pre-Holiday Classic. It will be played this Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University. The two Saginaw powerhouses, Arthur Hill and Saginaw high will both play, as well as Buena Vista, Midland High, Nouvel, Ypsilanti, Muskegon Heights, and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. $10 will get you in for the day and it kicks off at 2pm. If you would rather wait until after Christmas, the Motor City Roundball Classic will be kicking off its 14th annual series. In addition to teams like Detroit Country Day and Flint Powers, 41 varsity, boys, 10 girls varsity, eight boys JV, and six boys freshman teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Chicago, and Toronto will be playing. There are even four girls basketball games. It kicks off at noon, Friday December 26th with a girls game of Mt. Clemens vs. West Bloomfield. Entrance fee is $9 and games will be played at Chandler Park Academy (the former Harper Woods Regina and Lutheran East). Not bad for 10 hours of basketball!
