Welcome to the playoffs! Districts are in full swing and some teams are preparing for baseball and track while others still have games to be played. Some top ranked teams are already gone from the playoff landscape. If you’ve been following the turmoil from the rescheduled seasons, you’d know that schools have lost money because of an over saturation of games. Please, support our high schools and give them the $5 entry fee. Now that I’ve begged for you to go watch some games, I’ll get into the games!

Class A

Battle Creek Lakeview 80 Lansing Everett 79 (3OT)

It was an uphill battle all night for Lakeview. They had a 16 point lead that dwindled away and were down close to the end of regulation and each overtime. Hero of the night was Bobby Perry. He made three free throws in the last 22 seconds of regulation to tie the game as well as two free throws with five seconds left in the first overtime to send it to double overtime. His three pointer with 30 seconds left in the second overtime sent it to a third overtime. Not only did he get that done, he also hit a free throw with just under three seconds left in the third overtime to give his Battle Creek Lakeview squad a one point lead and proved to be the difference in the final score. Lansing was lead by Lavelle Walker with 19 points who carried four fouls through nearly half of the fourth quarter and all three overtimes. When he fouled Perry with 2.8 seconds left in the third overtime, it was the 51st foul of the game. It didn’t help that Everett was 17-31 from the charity stripe. Battle Creek Lakeview will lay Mason tonight.

Saginaw High 81 Saginaw Arthur Hill 66

It’s a shame that these two teams, widely considered the best teams in the state, had to play in the first round. There have been rumblings about seeding the districts so this type of game, #1 vs. #3 in the state, wouldn’t have to go at it the first week. This was the third meeting of these two teams this season. You could say that The Hill was “Green” with envy, as The High was lead by Draymond Green’s 29 points and Mike Green’s 14 first half points. We know that Draymond is going to State, but I’ve heard rumors that Dantonio is looking at Mike because of his great athletic ability and fantastic grade point average. D-Green also had 15 rebounds. On the other side of the court, the Lumberjacks were lead by Latreze Mushatt who had 19. The Trojans will face 7-13 Flushing tonight.

Bay City All Saints 60 Port Hope 6

Yes, that was the score. No, it wasn’t a typo. This Class D game was 10-3 after the first quarter and 37-3 at the half. 15 players scored for All Saints. Scoring leader was DeMario Walker with 12 points.

Class B
Frankenmuth 63 Bridgeport 61

If you have a tied game with only a few seconds left, you give the ball to your best player to take the shot. Bridgeport tied the game on a three pointer by Mario Williams with 10 seconds remaining in the game. With that in mind, you’d think that Frankenmuth would have told Brad Redford to take that shot. When Bridgeport triple teamed Redford, he found Matt Bender alone for a layup with only five seconds remaining. The score was amazingly low after one quarter with a tied game at five points apiece. Redford lead all scorers with 33 points on the night.   E.J. Brooks was the high scorer for Bridgeport with 23 points.
