Is Major League Baseball's Demise on the Horizon?
As much as soccer has taken a beating by Hondo and many others, I thought it pertinent to share another interesting perspective. Admittedly, I have found some things about the game that I appreciate other than the place-kickers it produces.  Something else has become evident as well; it will replace baseball in the pecking order of major sports.
We have become an international sports Mecca. The NBA is full of international players, baseball is becoming nothing but international players and hockey talent from Canada, Eastern Europe and Russia has been a staple in the USA for twenty-five years.
Once upon a time, people said nothing would ever replace America’s past time. Baseball was king and nothing could unseat the crown. In 2010, baseball is hanging out in fourth place and will continue to plummet over the next thirty years.
I believe soccer will replace it in the pecking order. Sure Latinos are taking over baseball. It is largely due to the best athletes in America playing football and basketball. So the scouts have to go out of the country to get the talent they need.
The best athletes collectively are just not playing the game as amateurs. And why would they? It pales in excitement to the NFL. It doesn’t have near the appeal of college football and the NCAA basketball tournament is the best sporting event in the country. The nation’s best athletes are probably in the NBA.
The baseball regular season is too long to care about. The game is slow. The players are out of shape and tickets are just too expensive. Without corporations having the ability to write off baseball tickets as a business expense, baseball would die tomorrow. Unless you are a Yankees fan or a Red Sox fan, you couldn’t give a rat’s rear end about baseball. And why would you? It is painfully slow.
I’ll watch my local minor league team for $8, but I’m not spending the Benjamin I would for an MSU/ Notre Dame ticket. Not on a baseball game. Would I spend a hundred bucks to see MSU play Duke at Cameron? You betcha… wouldn’t even second-guess my purchase. I’d never spend a hundred of anything on a baseball game.
Some of you will ask why am I beating up on baseball so badly? Well the truth is that I haven’t cared about baseball since the strike. It was quickly replaced in the pecking order. Do you even read about the regular season when you pick up the sports page? If it isn’t about the NFL, NCAA basketball or college football, I probably won’t read it. In fact, I’ll read about NASCAR before I read about the baseball regular season. Baseball? Why?
Football has continually evolved, and basketball has followed suit. As the years go bye, both of these sports have made changes relevant to what the fans want. Football has become more and more exciting as the vertical passing game has exploded with top-flight receivers. The three-point line and the 6’8†ball handler make for great basketball entertainment. What has baseball done? The NFL, NCAA basketball and college football all have instant replay. The camera doesn’t lie. It would have told the first base umpire that Armando Galarraga did in fact earn a no hitter.
Don’t even get me started on the steroids. Just put an asterisk after every record in the past twenty years and call it a day. None of the modern records are legit. Not one of them. Do you even care? Why would you? It is major league baseball.
So this brings me back to soccer. I am going to say it. I have been watching small snippets of the World Cup and I have concluded that international soccer is more exciting than major league baseball. I know I am not the only one that feels this way. As much as Latino’s love baseball, they love soccer immeasurably more. It isn’t even close. Latino’s are the largest segment of growth within the American population. As the demographics continue to change so will the pecking order of professional sports. It isn’t whether soccer replaces baseball; it is a matter of when.
