Allen Park, Mich.- The Detroit Lions announced today that they have agreed to terms with WR Mike Furrey on a three-year deal. Additional contract terms were not disclosed.

Furrey (6-0, 205) became one of the NFL's top receivers in 2006 after making the transition back to wide receiver after playing safety in 2005. He led the NFC with a team and career-high 98 catches in addition to a career-high 1,082 yards and six touchdowns. Furrey led or tied for the team lead in receptions in nine of 16 games in 2006 and is only the third player in team history to record 98 receptions (fifth best single-season in franchise history). He set a new NFL record for the most catches by a non-rookie after a season registering zero receptions.

For the month of December, Furrey led the NFL with 42 receptions and his 436 yards were the most in the NFC (second in NFL). Against three playoff teams (at New England 12/3, vs. Chicago 12/24 and at Dallas 12/31) he combined for 30 receptions for 332 yards and two touchdowns. In each game, he caught at least nine passes, recorded 100-yard receiving efforts and caught a touchdown pass.

Furrey joined Detroit's receiving corps after converting from receiver to safety for St. Louis prior to the 2005 campaign. He became the Rams' starting free safety after their fifth game and finished the season with a team-leading four interceptions, including a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown. He is the only active offensive player who has scored an interception return touchdown. Furrey registered 55 tackles (39 solo) through 16 games (11 starts).

In 2004, Furrey played in eight games as a reserve wide receiver. He was also a strong contributor on special teams, finishing second on the team with 13 tackles in addition to eight kickoff returns for 157 yards (19.6). In his first year with the Rams in 2003, Furrey had 20 receptions for 189 yards through 13 games.

Prior to joining St. Louis, Furrey was leading the AFL in receptions (108), receiving yards (1,574), receiving touchdowns (46, tying an AFL record for touchdowns in a single season), and points (288) as a wide receiver for the New York Dragons. In 2002, he led the Dragons with 74 receptions for 1,055 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Furrey's first season of pro football was in 2001 when he played for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL. He played in nine games and registered 18 receptions for 243 yards and a touchdown.

As a collegian at Northern Iowa, Furrey set new career standards for Gateway Conference receivers with 242 receptions for 3,544 yards and 27 touchdowns. He had at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his three seasons with the Panthers and was an all-Gateway Conference selection as a senior. Furrey transferred to Northern Iowa after playing nine games as a walk-on freshman at Ohio State in 1995.
