If you a Lion fan or at least a casual observer, I have been reporting since the second to last week of the season that Joe Thomas the OT from the Wisconsin Badgers was the Lions top priority for this April’s NFL draft. Nothing has changed.
With the acquisition of OT George Foster from the Broncos in the Dre’ Bly deal, instant speculation by media and fans was that the Lions would now look somewhere other then Thomas. That my friend is simply not true.
The Lions love the work ethic and the size and skill of Thomas and two sources today (after the trade) confirmed that Thomas is still very much on the radar. Foster is a big tackle similar to former Lions Stockar McDougle, but he also has issues with work ethic and motivation. Remember that a team like the Bronco’s that perennially has the best offensive line in football doesn’t let the good ones go. I am sure he will do well from a change of location and lets welcome him with open arms.
Foster will be good depth with Jon Scott still questionable after a broken hip. I see Foster being the backup LT and Scott backing up the RT. Backus would be starting on the right and Thomas on the left come fall if Thomas is selected, and I am confident he will be.
Marinelli builds on the lines and the Lions needed depth and help. They got it with the addition of Foster. I will have my Lions free agency primer coming late this afternoon with the three names the Lions covet in free agency. Don’t miss it!
